Yes, I AM just that awesome.

Would talking (and by talking I mean posting) about jailbreaking an iPhone/iPad be against the rules?

I know there's the rule about unauthorized hardware modification, but since this is about software (I guess) modification, I've been wondering about it.

V: I can assure you I mean you no harm.
Evey Hammond: Who are you?
V: Who? Who is but the form following the function of what and what I am is a man in a mask.
Evey Hammond: Well I can see that.
V: Of course you can. I'm not questioning your powers of observation; I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.
Alas, so many quotes, so little room in the signature box.

I know it's against the terms of use, but (if I remember correctly) it was recently deemed legal by some organization. If I did remember that correctly, then I don't see why it'd be against the rules, but I'm not entirely positive. Sorry.

I would assume it would be up to the discretion of the moderators because it is about their interpretation of the rules. If they felt that your post could be coupled in with that hardware modification section of the Forum Rules, they would lock it. I wouldn't see it as a bannable offense though.

As a rule of thumb for most sites, if you have to ask if its against the rules, it probably is. I honestly have no idea, but id play it safe and not post it.

Citizens of Me! The cruelty of the old Pharaoh is a thing of the past. Let a whole new wave of cruelty wash over this lazy land.

Hear the word of Pharaoh. Build unto me a statue of ridiculous proportion. One billion cubits in height......that I might be remembered for all eternity!

And be quick about it!

He can just wait until a mod okays it or says he can't do it in this thread.

I wouldn't do that if I was you, but I don't know.

Jailbreaking is completely legal. I don't see why it would be outlawed discussion.

PM an active mod. The last time I messaged an active mod about the legality of a topic I got an answer in a matter of hours.

This is typically not the best course of action. Mods have a wide range of opinions on a wide range of topics with a wide range of fluctuation between them. Asking one (or even two or three mods) and getting an Okay! (which you won't get) isn't going to give you an "out" for that one time that you do happen to post that thing and Mod X comes along and bans you for it.

In short: if you want to base it off of one mod's opinion (if you get it), go ahead. But I wouldn't.

Anyone but Foman. He smells like cheese.

Obviously, we cannot approve or disapprove of any particular thread until it has actually been posted and we can see both its content and context.

However, after perusing the ToU and CoC, I cannot see any particular rule that would, as a blanket matter, forbid the discussion of jailbreaking iPhones/iPads/other devices.

That said, it is clear that the creator of these devices, Apple, feels that jailbreaking is, if not illegal, a serious violation of its own rights. Furthermore, the posting and/or discussion of "hacking" or other intrusive software is generally prohibited.

So any thread discussing the jailbreaking of iPhones/iPads should probably be limited in scope to generalized discussion rather than details or "guides." There are other websites that are FAR better suited for those kinds of posts, regardless.

Again, this is not a blanket endorsement or prohibition of these kinds of threads -- just giving my own opinion on how I would likely interpret the rules if such a thread were to be posted. So remember that it is just one moderator's opinion, and that it always subject to change/clarification by a Bungie employee, and take it for what it's worth.
