Yes, he was in First Strike. The Legendary ending was an Easter Egg, it didn't effect the storyline whatsoever.

They use the same Sgt. Johnson model for all the Sgt.'s I watched him die in 'Halo', "T&R', 'AoCR', '343GS', and where-ever else.

it's kind of a joke about how much seargant johnson is in the game...he could die in one level, then be in the next one...heh..but yea, that's him....I just got dont reading "The Fall of Reach" yesterday, and I have "First Strike", but I remember Johnson, and Mendosa *the one who the MC sees get killed by the flood in first person view* are in the book...just something neat to relate to the game I guess.

question though: should I read "The Flood", or just go to "First Strike", since I've played the game through and through dozens of times...

read "The Flood"

it gives you a covenant perspective on some things, and alot of stuff that the game doesnt cover.

Read 'The Flood' it's not written very well, but it's just a little informative. it tells you about what's going on with all the Marines while you're on missions.

maybe the engine randomly generates the marines skins and voices and it has nothing to do with the story

sargent johnson dies when the airlock blows up and he specifically says something to you then gets blown apart
then when you go to the part where there's covenent on the landing above you most of the time he's there too
