Subject: Has Halo always been competitive?

Ask me a question, and I will most likely respond back with false and illogical information not pertaining to said question.

When we look at the Halo games, we may not only think of the wonderful story and background, but also the impressive multiplayer. Still, was Halo meant to be so competitive? We have competitions of professional gaming and how skillful players are at Halo, but was it all meant to be like this? Did we know it was even going to be like this?

I doubt it. It seems that MLG and competitive gaming grew with the addition of XBL which Halo 2 was at the forefront of during it's heyday. Like most gamers, the competitive fanbase is loyal so they followed along with Halo and here we are today. I doubt it was foresaw that the popularity would grow to the point it is today.

“Oh, it’s a little bit of everything, it’s the mountains, it’s the fog, it’s the news at six o’clock, it’s the death of my first dog, it’s the angels up above me, it’s the song that they don’t sing, It’s a little bit of everything.”
- Dawes, A little bit of everything

One may argue that as soon as a versus mode is incorporated, that the game becomes competitive by default. We had split-screen multi-player on Halo: CE, and the competition went from the couch, to the LAN, to the center stage.

"So much of what we do is ephemeral and quickly forgotten, even by ourselves, so it's gratifying to have something you have done linger in people's memories." John Williams

If "competitive" involves hosting LAN parties with friends late at night while having adult beverages, then yes. Halo is competitive on a whole new level.

V: I can assure you I mean you no harm.
Evey Hammond: Who are you?
V: Who? Who is but the form following the function of what and what I am is a man in a mask.
Evey Hammond: Well I can see that.
V: Of course you can. I'm not questioning your powers of observation; I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is.
Alas, so many quotes, so little room in the signature box.

It's what the fans made of it. I doubt it was made with the intention to be used as a competition platform (I can't know), but just the competitive spirit in the fan base made it into the competitive thing it it today.

RIP Halo 2: November 9, 2004-May 10, 2010
I was the 2nd to last person to get kicked off Halo 2, see the thread Here

It just kind of happened in Halo 2, and evolved immensely from there.

They had MLG for CE. It just wasn't as popular. Unless that is what you are saying, then completely disregard that statement.

MLG grew due to Halo but competitive gaming has been around for a very long time. CAL was one of the most popular leagues until it was bought out a few years ago. I used to enjoy watching MLG when Halo was still on the circuit but now that Reach replaced it I don't bother watching.

Halo was a very team oriented game and MLG variants really made Halo shine.
