If you're just transitioning from the Halo games to the books, look for Halo: Fall of Reach and Halo: First Strike. Halo: The Flood has a lot of mixed reviews, as it is really a retelling of Halo: Combat Evolved. I personally love it, as it gives a lot of side story as to what goes on in between the missions of the first game, but I understand that it isn't everyone's cup of tea.
From there, look into Halo: Ghosts of Onyx, Halo: Contact Harvest, and Halo: Cole Protocol. They'd be the next "step," as they build upon a lot of the information established in the previous novels (Note: Very few of the books are actually direct sequels of others)
If you are still digging the Halo novels, you can move on to Halo: Glasslands, which is a sequel to Halo: Ghosts of Onyx. Two other books, Halo: Cryptum and Halo: Primordium (read these in that order) are a lot different than the other books. They establish ancient, ancient history of the Humans, Forerunners (those that built the Halo rings) and the Flood, as well as a little bit on the Covenant. They might not appeal to you, but I could be wrong.
There are a couple of other books too, such as Halo: Evolutions, a collection of short stories set in the Halo-verse. There is also Halo: Helljumper, Halo: Blood Line, Halo: Fall of Reach Boot Camp. Halo the Graphic Novel, and Halo: Uprising, but I haven't gotten the chance to read these yet.
As stated, the books are pretty common, and can be found at any bookstore. The earlier ones are cheap, but Glasslands, Primordium, and possibly Cryptum may be a bit more expensive, since they are newer.
