not as in 'do they attract spam?', cos they do, but rather, 'do they keep the spam out of the rest of the forum?'

They work in private groups because of the small communities. I doubt they'd work on the mains.

This pretty much sums up my thoughts.

"You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." -Johnny Cash

I believe that they would help keep spam out of the rest of the forum/s, but it wouldn't completely get rid of the problem.

Yax is a shining beacon in these dark times. You should all strive to be more like Yax.

Of course not.

Old school Bungie, born and raised,
In the Septagon is where I spend most of my days.
Relaxin', maxin', posting all cool,
Talking about Halo, life and some school.
Got in one little argument, and the mods got scared,
they said "You're gonna get banned and your member title'll be bare!"

Works pretty well with the flood.

Well... Considering they are against the rules, and invariably get locked.... I'd have to say no.

This. The flood can be pretty random and get a lot of response but I think if you want people to respond to your question on this forum you have to have an interesting topic.

More often than not, they do work. At least in gathering most of the spam. There will always be some knuckleheads who defy the courtesies of the online Forums and just post their spam anywhere, but the "spam threads" do tend to corral most of it thus making it easier for the Forum mods to keep a handle on the rest.

At least from what I've seen.

In the case of B.net, the spam had such world-ending potential that they didn't create a spam thread, they created a spam sub-Forum.

We call it "The Flood"...

;)

The flood does something similar.

I do believe they work for the most part, but it will never stop it completely.

Thirded.

I've seen plenty of groups with a "spam", "chat", "post whore", or other such thread designed to keep the trivial banter that inevitably comes with a well-meshed community contained within a single thread and not polluting the other threads. But it only works when you have a cohesive group with a sense of shared responsibility for the forum or group -- i.e., none of the public forums on Bungie.net.

Please stop complaining about the 'death of a loved one' it's my job. They probably deserved it anyways. Here's a warning, if you keep making pentagrams out of the neighbors livestock I will personally come to your house and kill everyone you love. Now leave me alone, I got to get back to work.

No, it would get locked fairly fast.
