What is the best method while in a situation of battling against your opponent: crouching, jumping, or advancing forwards or backwards (this is in any situation)?

Fun fact: 9/10 users with no linked gamertag are better than you at Halo. That doesn't necessarily mean that I am; but it does mean there's a pretty solid chance.

Jumping and moving towards your target are usually pretty bad ideas.

Crouching, backing off and strafing are all generally reasonably useful.

Running towards the enemy in a gunfight is a hallmark of bad players. All you're doing is making it easier for your opponent to predict where you're going to be, what you're going to do and how you're going to do it.

So what about backing up? What if you fall off some edge or you are trapped in a corner? What then?

There's this thing called situational awareness.

Tell me how to be more aware of the situation at a dangerous time

spiral out

Run forward in a straight line for the beatdown.

'At a dangerous time' isn't the point. Use your eyes as you play. Learn the layout of the map. It takes perhaps two games- or half an hour in forge- to memorise the general layout and features of a map, and whereabouts each team will spawn. If you're doinitright, you shouldn't find yourself in situations where you've got your back to a wall unless you've got team support. Know your surroundings and think about what you're doing and it simply won't happen.

In every assassination, situational awareness would be most necessary...
