Tricking in Halo 3 just isn't phenomenal enough.
Compare the 60 Councilors army to the 25 Hornet army.
Now I'm sure you'll be saying the Hornets are better or can't simply decide. But the Councilors are much more bad-ass imo.
When I first went in with an army of Hornets, I thought it was going to be an epic battle. Only the initial charge (all the Hornets move towards the third tower) and destruction of the Phantom turned out to be amazing. After that, they sucked against AA Wraiths and never even bothered with the third tower enemies.
Whereas when I led armies of 60 Councilors, they all jumped like crazy, berserked all at once, and all drew swords. It was really bad-ass. It was only when they fought against Tartarus that they died (because of the stupid death barrier being placed so close to the lower platform and cheap damage sponge boss).
But there is one thing in H3 that I consider unprecedented. This. There's also these:
-AI armies
-next step of cutscene manipulation, active AI battle
-Flood army
But by no means does all this mean I actually enjoyed doing these. Setting them up was unbearable. Only the result was enjoyable although still lacking in quality. Of course, I can't go back and make them better or more convenient because of the checkpoint system, with the exception of the cutscene one.
Things that I consider big fails on Bungie's part in H2, H3, and Reach (the plagues of Halo):
-checkpoint system: it's only good when playing as intended. Exploration and tricking is inconvenienced by lack of cps. Likewise, AI battles are also ruined by cps, ones that are gained from killing enemy participants or just come out for no apparent reason. In H3, there were too many cps at times, too close and not spread out enough to be actually useful.
Although H3 did have checkpoint hotspots (like how you can get them on Halo and Silent Cartographer), you had to be away for a longer amount of time to get the cp. Afaik, they only exist on The Storm and The Covenant.
-AI: friendly AI one shotting player after betrayal (H3, Reach), stupid drivers (H3, Reach), slow (Reach), incapable of meleeing, no longer follow or stay back with the player, unkillable (H3, Reach)
-scripting: Guilty Spark battle, LNoS. Self explanatory. Didn't get in the way in H2 as much as it did in the later Halo games
-confinement: death barriers (H3), 10 second countdowns (Reach)
TLDR: I hate H3. H2 is more tolerable. H1 is my favorite Halo.
