Poll: Which theory do you feel is most reasonable? [closed]
Total Votes: 6
Ok, so I’ve been thinking lately about this Halo 3 trailer and Cortana. People have said she sounds different at first, and then sounds like she usually does. I think everyone agrees that the deep voice at the beginning talking with Cortana is Gravemind. Frankie said that “there’s obviously something terribly wrong…” with Cortana in the trailer, as can be seen in the frame where her eye is rolled back in her head. So, I’ve come up with a couple theories about Cortana in the Halo 3 Announcement Trailer. Be sure to vote which theory you feel is most reasonable, and tell if anything is inaccurate in my theories or needs to be changed or if you have your own, different theory. I know that the Halo 3 Announcement Trailer is based on “fiction”, as said by Achronos, so the trailer itself may not have to do with game play but only to get fans interested, so all of these could be way off. And yes, it is long.
Note: the quote explanations are set up as follows:
“actual quote” -- “possible translation / interpretation” -- further explanation.
Theory 1
The Cortana seen in the transmissions is actually Cortana. She sounds odd at first because of a bad transmission of her message. She has talked to Gravemind and is trying to tell Chief something through her message. The only reason Gravemind’s voice is heard at first is to remind us that he is going to play an important part in Halo 3.
Quote Explanation for Theory 1 as Spoken by Cortana:
“I have defied gods and demons.” (general statement) -- “I have defied the powerful and evil” -- This would make sense for Cortana to say since she has defied the Covenant (both powerful and evil)
“I am your shield, I am your sword” (directed at Chief) -- “I am your protection, I am your power” -- This quote also makes sense for Cortana to say, since she is part of Master Chief’s protection and power.
“I know you, your past, your future” (directed at Chief) -- “I know everything about you” -- Cortana does know Chief and his past, but how could she know his future? Perhaps she learned something from Gravemind?
“This is the way the world ends.” (general statement about what is seen in trailer) -- “The firing of the Forerunner structure is what will end the world” -- This raises the question of how Cortana knows the future, unless Gravemind has told her something.
Theory 2
The Cortana seen in the transmission is actually Cortana. However, she has sided with or is controlled by Gravemind, which is why both Cortana and Gravemind’s voices are heard at the beginning. As the transmission gets clearer, Gravemind’s voice is covered up by Cortana’s. Gravemind is attempting to use Cortana to contact Chief, for reasons unknown.
Quote Explanation for Theory 2 as Spoken by Cortana and Gravemind:
“I have defied gods and demons.” (general statement) -- “I (Cortana and Gravemind) have stood against the powerful and evil” -- Each of them has survived through impossible odds, seeming to defy the gods’ wills for them do die. Cortana and Gravemind have also defied what they consider to be evil, the Covenant and Forerunners, respectively.
“I am your shield, I am your sword” (directed at Chief) -- “I (Cortana and Gravemind) am your protection” -- This makes since for Cortana to say, but Gravemind?
“I know you, your past, your future” (directed at Chief) -- “I know everything about you” -- Cortana does know Chief and his past, but again, how could she see the future? Maybe Gravemind knows Chief’s past and is also able to see the future (can’t be proven yet).
“This is the way the world ends.” (general statement about what is seen in trailer) -- “The activation of this Forerunner artifact will bring about the end of the world” -- Yet again, how could Cortana know the future; Maybe Gravemind knows that what was seen will come to be.
Theory 3
The Cortana seen in the transmission is not actually Cortana. Gravemind is using the “unusually formidable” AI construct in High Charity (which was taken over by Gravemind) to impersonate the real Cortana. Because he is talking through this AI construct, his voice can be heard. He is attempting to impersonate someone close to Chief (Cortana) for unknown reasons.
Quote Explanation for Theory 3 as Spoken by Gravemind:
“I have defied gods and demons.” (general statement) -- “I have defied the immortal and evil.” – Gravemind has survived for an unknown, but long amount of time in his “grave”; because he has lived so long he feels that he has challenged the gods and is “immortal”. He has also defied Forerunners by surviving, which he considers to be evil because they tried to destroy him by putting him in his “grave”.
“I am your shield, I am your sword” (directed at Chief) -- “I am your protection and weapon” -- This is somewhat ironic for Gravemind to say to Chief, but perhaps there’s an unknown reason that Master Chief needs Gravemind.
“I know you, your past, your future” (directed at Chief) -- “I know all about you” -- Because Chief is a Human, and evidence points towards Humans being Forerunners, Gravemind would know Humans' (Chief’s) history. Gravemind may also know parts of the future, but there’s not enough information to determine that yet.
“This is the way the world ends.” (general statement about what is seen in trailer) -- “The firing of the Forerunner structure will bring about the end of Earth” -- This may be how Gravemind wants the Earth to end or else he would have to know the future.
Personally, I’m leaning towards Theory 3, only because there’s just something not quite right with Cortana and I don’t think she would side with Gravemind. That AI construct in High Charity seems to be forgotten about and I think it will probably have an important role in Halo 3 somehow.
I could just be way overanalyzing all this though…
