Dear Lord, that's depressing. A soul that keeps fighting for epic profit... I mean...

This does go back to a little piece I read on Marathon Infinity's ending. You escape the Marathon universe to get to the next universe.

Wait a second...

At the end of Halo 3, you escape from the known Universe thanks to the Ark's destruction. What if in Bungie Halo canon, the Chief dies (after already escaping from the Marathon universe and dying and becoming John-117) and now your soul moves on to become whoever the protagonist is in Destiny.

Was that their whole hint-hint with the planet at the end of the Legendary Ending of Halo 3?

The Joyeuse IP Formula

In canon, that would be the coolest thing ever. Legally, I don't know if that could be done. If there was a map or something on the Legendary ending planet, it would have to be changed.

Why legally? I don't believe that they would have actually put their own graphics on the Halo planet.

But here's the planet's surface anyway.

Oh, half-baked post there. My bad.

I meant that if the mystery planet and the new IP map correlated due to the "universe escaping" theory, then there would technically be Halo data in the new IP/new IP data in halo, which is no longer Bungie's property. That's where legalities would start tangling.

But now that I see the planet, yeah. No. Not the boob volcanoes we're looking for (inside joke. See SJ's thread.).

I don't believe for a second that Bungie would outrightly affirm that this was the case. They never technically confirmed any of the links between Marathon and Halo besides "there are similarities and parallels" or something to that affect.

I know what you're saying, but you're implying that it would not be the more subtle of conspiracy theories :P

Well, I suppose you're right. It would be a thing that they'd never confirm nor deny. But damn that would be cool.

Im not sure what to think honestly. I'm not sure there will be such a huge plot twist, the flood ala halo 1, but I'm sure that the first game in what will most likely be a series is going to establish a good base that could possibly then be bolstered by other medium. take books or even terminal like back story.

We've been seeing a lot of "see you starside" with the Destiny stuff. I used to attribute the tagline with Aerospace, but it seems to be tied in with Destiny, instead.

I would assume that "see you starside" would take us off of just one planet, or at least into space.

<< Incredible. [10141-026-SRB4695], with minimal influence from this Assembly, has attempted to build an abstract fractal structure within Shaw-Fujikawa Space. Although her first attempt was a failure, success could finally remove our dependence on biological systems altogether! If our Minds could somehow achieve freedom of expansion within eleven-dimensional space, immortality might be within reach. <<and this
<< Each of us represents a single trans-human mind. Each of us is an undrawn map - not a mere physical reconstruction of an object as it was in life - but full, human potential realized in crystal and thinking at the speed of light!
But now that map has, for the first time, been superimposed on one of our creators. The path has been reversed, and we are re-made as one! <<

Sounds interesting concerning AIs, hero's soul, universe escaping and stuff.

Sounds like a lot of Durandal throwbacks, just by paying attention to the language and their goals. The datapads themselves look a lot like the Marathon terminals. This could be a simple style homage, though. I'll look into it further.

Cortana, there's another detail about Joyeuse that seems relevant. Some legends say that Joyeuse also contained the Holy Lance, which has about a billion and one aliases one of which is the Spear of Destiny.

Yo dawg, I heard you like AI . . .

The Spear of Destiny is, by legend, the spear that pierced Jesus' side during the crucifixion. For the sake of having a viable conversation, let's forget the Christian specifics and just say the Spear of Destiny was used in part to kill a messiah figure. So Joyeuse could be an AI that outwardly looks like a weapon used by our conquering hero, Charlemagne, that secretly hides an inward power that could bring down some savior figure in the game. That might fit Joyeuse.

[L00's wild speculation]
So, what's the AI version of a weapon inside a weapon? Perhaps a virus of some sort. Or, depending on what references and parallels to Halo are included in Destiny, maybe the idea of an AI that has delusions of godhood (paralleling that "killing a savior" aspect) is rampancy?
[/L00's wild speculation]

Even the little logo for Destiny could be taken to imply one thing nested inside another.

"We live in a special time; the only time where we can observationally verify that we live in a very special time" - Lawrence Krauss.

I was a finalist :P

After reading the wikipedia article relating to Charlemagne, and then moving onto Joyeuse; his personal sword, I've found some food for thought material.

During the conquest of Lombardy, Charlemagne had made the magnates (people of a high social position in the society) pay homage to him. It was at this moment he was crowned with the Iron crown of Lombardy, given at the capital of the kingdom.

With correlation to L00's post above, this crown was believed to be forged from one of the nails used in the most famous crucifixion in human history. A link between his sword, Joyeuse, and the crown if ever there was one.

Given the crown made one a "A King of Italy", which embodied power, strength, and intelligence. L00's speculation about Joyeuse being an AI which has those delusions can carry on to the protagonist at some point within the game. Charlemagne possesses a "rampant" sword, which controls him through the "Iron crown of Lombardy"; or something along those lines.

Durandal and Joyeuse are allegedly filled to the brim with pieces of holy relics in the first place. We'd have to go back to Marathon to research Durandal a bit more to see if the holy relics have any prominence in that trilogy.

Acutally, both Durandal and Cortana do stumble upon "holy relics" so to speak.

With Cortana it's the index and the Forerunner information and such. I never really got huge into the lore post Halo 3, so someone else would have to investigate this angle further.

With Durandal, it's the player character, who was "grafted to machines your builders didn't understand." At least, that would be my best guess. Marathon has a lot of parallels to the song of Roland, but none of the elements are seem consistent enough to allow us to draw conclusions from it.
