Very simple:

Don't show the player rank, keep it on Bungie records of course to matchmake with players of similar skill level, but don't display it.

Results:

No incentive to cheat, same matchmaking efficiency. Halo becomes less a game of braggers, modders, and immaturity, and brings it back to just good'ol gameplay.

well, it can be fun sometimes to show off your high rank, but then again you dont NEED ranks to play. However ive played alot of online games and it doesnt matter ranks or not people still mod

That is the best idea I have heard yet. On top of all of the gameplay crap people want to see (vehicles, weapons, maps, etc.), that is the best for game.

Good and bad, reasons? Why sure. First lets start off with a positive note, it is a good idea, because it does encourage friendlier gameplay, and less motivation for cheaters and that sort. But, on the contrary, it is also a bad idea, because xbox live is a competetive community, and to those who take it seriously, and work hard for these numbers, would like a symbol of their achievement. I personally would want the number beside my name because it shows a sense of accomplishment, but on the other hand, it does give people reason to cheat, and it does tend to cause trash talk, but hey! There is always the solution of exiting post game lobby, and a little invention i like to call the mute function.

yeah but without having ranks to worry about then you would see a lot more quitters and people who just leave there controller and not play which would frustrate lots of people.

Actully, I'd rather have a cool looking number beside my name, that way I could be cool.

Actually, when you have a game, where rank is not a big part of gameplay, then it actually it results in more quitters, teamkilling and other things in relation. When you do not have a rank, gamers do not care about it and will insist on teamkilling, because it does not affect anything, and more people will quit because there is no consequence. It will result in less cheaters of all sorts, but it will inevitably result in ways that will degrate gameplay. My point is, is that no matter if there is a number beside your name or not, there will still be those people, who wil find any type of way, to ruin the gameplay experience.

There are + and - s to any situation, but the benefits faaaar outway the simple concept of achievement. Trust me, when you can walk into a game with absolute conviction that you arent gonna be modded against or standbyed, and when everyone is playing for the sake of enjoyment(which is what games SHOULD be all about) instead of your self esteem or image, that is when you extract the greatness out of Halo. I've been a Haloer since CE, and the Halo world has changed into a crowd of adolescence, immature, and narrow minded players who compete for title by any means necessary, and miss the whole point of why they are playing. Thats not the way the classic Halo CE LANs of carefree and competitive gameplay used to be. I honestly think Halo2 xbLIVE is a joke because how these gamers have reaped the most insignifacant part of the game as their main objective.

Oh and people can quit, but they will still lose rank and be matchd with lower players. That doesnt hurt the idea in the least.

But, you have to keep in mind, online changed because halo ce for xbox, was not legitimately online, because xbox connect is completely free. if your talking about the pc version, then i can see why gameplay was much more enjoyable, because you couldn't really trash talk by typing. And keep in mind that halo gamers for xbox, without live, was all lan with friends, and any trash talk was just you and your friends, no big deal. But when you enter xbox live, you find people all over the world you cannot stop people from being dicks, cheaters and quitters, by removing a number beside your gamertag. Although i do understand what your saying, its just that there is noe way to avoid these people, so I want my number to give me a sense of accomplishment.

Trust me, Bungie would have a huge break as well. Do you think they enjoy monitoring games and changing the code constantly to weed out modders? They did it right with CE, they need to make a perfect blend of H1 and H2, and H3 will go in the history books.

I say fix the problem with dedicated servers making it so bungie is host and not any of the players, this pretty much covers cheating on all bases except for modding which is easily detected and wont be a huge problem. removing ranks would be penalizing all players instead of just the cheating community which is the way it should be.

Rank will be kept as in almost every single xbox game for XBL. Without a Rank, people won't be so compelled to keep playing Halo. They want to show off their number next to thier name.

Ahhh getting rid of visible ranks. im not sure how i'd feel about that. On one hand there would be very little insentive to cheat, but without any visible way of measuring how good you are theres little insentive for me to play matchmaking and then go to my friend and say "yeah im a level twenty"

I think instead of getting rid of rankings, patch up the game so tight that no one will be able to cheat in the first place.

Accomplishments should be sought in performance. i.e. Postgame Carnage Report, not Title. We all know almost all th level 34's and above don't have that type of skill, but rather had elements of the game swing in their favor to get the rank, and brag about it to others. Lets not fool ourselves here....

  • 05.23.2006 5:12 PM PDT

yes! i have hated ranks ever since halo 2 came out and people started to cheat to climb to the top...they can have ranks, but just dont show them...they should only be used internally to match players in matchmaking...if your a good player you will still be matched with other good players who will be more serious and not team kill and whatnot...this will also promote more use of the party system, so you know the players your playing with and wont have to worry about team mates not performing...this will also bring back alittel bit of Halo CE

If you are a true warrior, you don't need a rank to make people fear you. Trust me, in Halo CE LAN parties( I traveled from city to city), people feared me after one game, and I didn't have a armor symbol or a rank, just a green triangle over my head to my allies.

POST GAME CARNAGE REPORT is what talks for you, AND there can be no deception in that my friends.

i hope bungie comes up with a way(or xbl?) to screen voices. So whenever they have the annoying high pitch squel of a 12 year old, they can block them out :)

I like seeing my rank...

I wouldn't mind if OTHER people couldn't see it...

But I do like seeing my own rank. It lets me know how good I AM. Or at least, how far in levels I've gone.

To cut on cheating, you could make your rank only visible to yourself... And if someone cheated anyway, permaban them and erase their rank, and start it back to zero.
