I am looking to take an older computer apart this summer and i plan to make it really good for gaming. I was wondering what would be the best graphics card to use. space is no problem cause this case is HUGE! office server sized. i can basically put anything ino it but i wanted to ask my fellow gamers what their opinions were.

If you have any advice, post your thought here plz. i was kinda leaning towards a NVIDIA card but i never know what most people like. also could you include a price estimate if possible? while i want a good card, i dont want to go bankrupt building my dream computer.

Thanks in advance for your ideas!

well, while a sli set up is technically the best, its not practical, so we can scratch that, wats your budget? and do u kno wat kind of mobo your using? i hope its pci e compatible, but for cards, if u want to go budget and get a damn good card at tha same time i think the 6600 gt is decent, its around $130-150. if u want proformance for a few more bucks, then id get the x800xl for around $150-170, its a decent card thats probably wat id advise, but if want to get top-of-the-line then go for a 7900gtx i dont kno the prices for it but there around $400-500, or u could get the 1800xtx, thats the ati counterpart (wat have i done...) of the 7900gtx and tis around the same ballpark in pricing

no the ATI counterpart to the nvidia 7900GTX is the X1900XT. The X1800xt is like the 7800GTX.

I'd advise you to get the 7900GTX. Seems to be a much nicer card, and a top seller.

7600gt is the best in that price range.....its a mid/high end card.

yes, but as he said he's at a tight budget. im not too updated with the 7900's, but first, check how much the 7900GTX's cost. if its 150 and under, i recommend you get it. if not, then get the 5500's or the 6600's. theyre decent enough.

Yay, let's just throw around cards and prices and call it a day.
first of all, SLi is very practical especially if you play on resolutions greater than 1280x1024 and with newer games. second, while the 6600gt was a good card, it no longer plays the new games that well and i would reccomend getting the 7600gt. which is priced similar to the x800xl and would tear the x800xl apart. next if you are looking at the $300 price range, the 7900gt is a very good choice. finally if you are looking at the real highend cards the x1900xt and the 7900gtx are both very good choices.

and if you are looking at agp, get no less than a 7800gs as the rest dont perform as well for any newer games. And my personal reccomendation would be to just drop the AGP motherboard and get a nice new PCI-e motherboard with a pci-e graphics card as the selection is much better.

EDIT: after i saw your $150 budget, defiantly hope you have PCI-e and get the 7600gt. If not, the 6600gt is your best bet.

well the thing is that im rebuilding a computer from nothing basically but a huge case. i'm getting a new motherboard, graphics card, and all those other computer goodnessy thingies that make it go. so i will definitely get a PCI-e cause thats what i heard are basically all the cards are now(sorry for offensively poor grammer, im in a hurry) so definitely $150 with PCI-e, ok?

Sli is a great idea. You don't have to use two video cards with an sli board, one will work. An sli board gives you the opportunity to upgrade in the future to a second video card, instead of buying a more expensive/better video card.

No dont get the one fastmatt suggested!!!!!!!!!!!!

for for a 6600GT not a regular 6600. The regular 6600's are alot worse although it may not seem like it. It would be wise to spend an extra $50 because you will get alot more preformance out of a 6600GT

No SLI is abad idea if your not getting the 2nd card in 3 months, by the time you get the 2nd card there will be a better card for that price and give you the same OR better preformanceas the 2 cards. Personally get the 7600Gt costs are around $150 now. But the 7600gs is around $100. the 7600gs will OWN a 6600Gt.

I didn't suggest anything, I asked if that one was good, I got an answer (a helluvan answer) but it helped me.
