I <3 you too Bungie

I don't understand how Bungie can use their agile-based methodology for different stages of making games (discussed in their production articles and by employees in GDC talks) while having any effective production staff with boots on the ground. It seems that production staff would just be measuring progress, putting out fires, and scheduling tasks using custom metrics. This seems to hinder progress and put developers in a box/bottleneck rather than supporting the team.

Can anyone clarify?

"I don't care if it's God's own anti-Son of a -blam!- Machine or a giant hula-hoop!"

I'm sure there are many of us haven't read any of their production articles and ... GDC talks. Do you have any specific links?

I'll look some up tomorrow and post. I'm working right now. :) The article is on this site. The GDC stuff is on the GDConline section of the GDC site.

Half of what I say is true. The other half are also lies.

Bungie is unlike any other gamemaking company I know of because of their crazed way of doing things. I don't know everything but I do know that it is effective for them, whatever it is.

Кланяються мені!

I am fairly certain Bungie shenanigans only go so far. In fact I would bet that a lot of time during development is treated quite seriously, and when deadlines are in danger of being missed playtime ceases to exist within the studio. Bungie generally only shows us the lighter side of things, things they intend for us to know.

Though I would laugh at a ViDoc of the dry parts of game developement. Like bureaucracy. An hour long ViDoc of tax statements, business quotas, and powerpoints!

In my opinion Bungie is able to deliver quality game and support despite their flawed methodology. As long as the product gets there I'm fine with however they roll.

I think it comes down to "Another person's trash is another person's treasure" in that BUNGiE might develop a certain way that leaves people wondering why in the world they would develop that way but for BUNGiE it works. Really I have faith in BUNGiE and when they put out quality games its because who they have works well with what they do and every team conglomerates into massive being that makes cool -blam!-. So really if you think about your post you are doubting BUNGiE's process which you may view as flawed but they view as perfect.
