To be honest, when I first saw all this in the weekly update I thought 2 things.
#1- there is an actual legendary ending but,
#2- No matter what anyone does,(kill all the bobs, hit all switches etc) that until the "time" mentioned in "There'll be another time..." is reached there won't be a legendary ending.
The weekly update by bungie has slowed my hardcore search for what unlocks the legendary ending.

One word. Balance.
Imo, what they did was good but they could have made Brute ranks a bit more distinct. For example,
Brute Ultras berserk with their weapons drawn
Brute Majors keep their distance
Brute Minors always go up to the player
Brute Stalkers move the fastest and never berserk
Jump Pack Brutes never try to melee like CE Goldies that have plasma rifles
Hammer Chieftains follow up with a leap melee immediately after throwing a grenade

Does anyone have ideas as to why Bungie made them so easy compared to their ferocious Halo 2 counterparts?
Bungie said in one of their Halo 3 interviews that the Halo 2 brutes were uninteresting damage sponges and wanted to re-invent them.This.

If it displeases you, turn on Mythic/Thunderstorm/Tilt.This. You'll have to go for an assassination because they can take much more melees.I find it funny how the powerless armor brutes had armor lock yet no shields for full time use, but the halo 3 brutes had power armor and sucked even more than the reach minors
