Any post where the sole purpose is to "bump" the thread back to the top of page 1 is a prohibited "bump" in violation of the rules, whether the thread is only a few minutes old or hasn't been posted in for weeks.
So what if I post something relevant to the thread, but I'm only posting it to bump the thread?
In other words, what keeps this post here from being a bump? In that situation, you would be both contributing to the discussion and bringing it back to the top of page 1, which, of course, is the entire premise of the discussion forum structure. So that's fine.I've seen instances where it was deemed "not fine", but I recognize that Ninjas take it all on an individual basis, so one decision does not reflect everyone.
But yes, this is pretty much the work around. Post something worthy and contributory to the thread, and the "bump" is now a handy-dandy contribution!
As far as I can tell, any contribution to a non-archived thread that adds to the discussion (either expanding on thoughts previously brought up, or bringing something new to the table) should be perfectly acceptable. However, "omg awesome", "saved", and quotes shouldn't be acceptable.
It's an easy line to figure out, really.
