Subject: A question about the rules.

Who the hell do you think I am?

So I'm aware that it is against the rules to bump up a thread that is "old", and that it is a ban-able offense.

But how old would it be to have it considered breaking the rule?

It depends why you are bumping the thread.

If you had the posting of a tortoise it would be acceptable to respond to a question or continue a discussion from days past, so long as it was relevant.

If you chose to go on bungie.net at school, mods would probably know what was up.

I would say a month. That's when the report button disappears.
The report button disappears after 2 weeks, but I agree that a month sounds about right.

There will always be exceptions though, like if it was a thread for a theory on Bungie's new IP, then new information surfaced, I imagine it would be allowed.

Before you ban me, think to yourself. What would satan do? Satan would ban me, are you satan? If you ban me that makes you satan, satan.

A month?! Lies!! I swear if it gets off the first page it's bad to bump it..

Bumping is just plain against the rules.

Here's a good source of information: HFCS.
What is/counts as spam?
...
"Bumping" a thread solely to bring it back to the top of the forum.

I've always wondered this...

Is simply posting in an old thread against the rules, even if what you're posting is relevant and furthers discussion? Like, if I went back a month or two and found an old thread, could I still post in it?

Is it bumping if I'm posting something relevant to the thread and not just 'bump'?

  • 03.05.2012 1:24 PM PDT

Have you seen my mind anywhere? I seem to have lost it...

0x0 x0x 0x0 000 000 x0x 000
x0x 0x0 0x0 0xx 000 0x0 000
x0x x0x x00 0xx 0x0 x0x 0x0

I have seen you future

I think I remember Old Papa Rich saying something to the effect that it only counts as bumping if you don't add something to the conversation. That would mean that you can bump a thread on the bottom of the page and get in trouble, but could post something constructive in a month old thread and be fine.

On December 1st, 2012, I met Neil deGrasse Tyson. I shook the man's hand, and even made him laugh. Not much else to do with my life now.

But here are some threads that, when bumped, still encourage a lot of discussion.

Any post where the sole purpose is to "bump" the thread back to the top of page 1 is a prohibited "bump" in violation of the rules, whether the thread is only a few minutes old or hasn't been posted in for weeks.

Now that's the real question, isn't it. I'd say it's rule of thumb there. If I was a moderator, I'd still call it bumping based on factors such as if it's the original poster and how developed and meaningful the post seems.

No it wasn't. It was pinned after he bumped it.
Maybe he pumped it to show it was pinned?

But that doesn't make much sense, so I dunno...

So what if I post something relevant to the thread, but I'm only posting it to bump the thread?

In other words, what keeps this post here from being a bump?

The Ninjas are not expected to be role models. Bungie gave them orange text not to make their posts stand out as examples, but because... um... because...

Orange is pretty? -blam!- if I know. I just know that the Ninjas aren't role models.

In that situation, you would be both contributing to the discussion and bringing it back to the top of page 1, which, of course, is the entire premise of the discussion forum structure. So that's fine.

I've seen instances where it was deemed "not fine", but I recognize that Ninjas take it all on an individual basis, so one decision does not reflect everyone.

But yes, this is pretty much the work around. Post something worthy and contributory to the thread, and the "bump" is now a handy-dandy contribution!

As far as I can tell, any contribution to a non-archived thread that adds to the discussion (either expanding on thoughts previously brought up, or bringing something new to the table) should be perfectly acceptable. However, "omg awesome", "saved", and quotes shouldn't be acceptable.

It's an easy line to figure out, really.

I think it's considered "old" when all discussion has ceased within the thread, if your "bump" does not significantly contribute, its not necessary and therefore is spam.
