Subject: Halo: Reach, Canon or Not?

"Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. " Ephesians 6:11-12

Good people off the Reach Forum... Do you think that Reach's Campaign is canon?

  • 03.08.2012 10:17 AM PDT

The Reach campaign was kinda depressing.. I heard it wasnt anything like the book so ill go ahead and say not canon.

  • 03.08.2012 10:19 AM PDT

Throwin this out there for clarification from people who know the subject:

I remember some people saying there were no spartan III's on reach or some crap like that and that the reach campain is not cannon for that reason.

In most cases, the main medium for a universe overrides all other canon, like how Star Trek and Star Wars movies completely ignore previous events in books, comics and such...but personally, I hope 343i throws Reach out the window. Decent campaign but it just unnecessarily stepped on toes.

K/D of .55? Sorry buddy, no opinion for you. You're wrong.

I say it was cannon, as in you used a cannon at the end and blew up the Covenant.

Halo Reach is canon. The gaming story world of Halo supersedes what happens outside the games. The games are, as they put it, "Prime Canon".

Anyone who claims the AR takes skill ought to shoot himself in the head. Preferably with the AR because they'll most likely miss with any other weapon.

I don't care. It was fun while it lasted.

  • 03.09.2012 11:01 PM PDT

BAM! Said the lady.

It depends on what you want. If you never read the books or simply didn't like Fall of Reach, you can make Halo: Reach canon. If you read Fall of Reach and liked it more than the game, you can make the book canon. Simple.

This is off topic but... how does someone get 2 Perfections with a K/D of 0.8 in Rumble Pit?! How is that possible?

  • 03.09.2012 11:19 PM PDT

What made Halo: Reach not canon anyway?

  • 03.10.2012 12:39 AM PDT

Halo 2 > Halo 3 > Halo 3 ODST > Halo Reach > Halo CE

Based on campaigns.

I'm starting to think you're just trolling with all you KD posts. Whether Reach is canon or not is nothing to do with Reach multiplayer, so what does KD have to do with it?

Let me guess, 0.69 KD so I'm not allowed an opinion

Had you asked me this same question one year ago and I would have said Game Canon> Book Canon because there were some things I could never explain.

Although, now that 343i has cleared most of the crap up with the ONI data drops, aside from a few inconsistencies with the number of known Spartan 3's, (Halo Reach is not the only medium that counters this, even Headhunters do. If headhunters is canon, so is Reach).

There is still great debate about the POA on the ground, but most of it is speculation about the thrust-ers. Until we actually get some information on how heavy the ship is and how powerful the thrust-ers are, we will just have to go with the fact the Keyes is a crazy mutha #$# and risked the ship for the Package.

Aside from the POA issue, Reach is 99.9% canon.

My problems [with Reach] are basically just full parties, mlg, and people who go out of their way not to get killed.

Reach the game was a disgrace to the book's canon. I mean, Noble Team was fine and all but they completely spat on the original (and perfectly fine) lore.

I understand they wanted to make the game a surprise for those fans who were familiar with the canon. However there is a major problem when I read the book, play the game, and feel as though they are two different worlds.

Although they do feel as if they are on two different worlds, the timeline fits. Go up to Halopedian and search for the ONI data drops. They will clear almost everything that was puzzling with Halo Reach.

I know they have attempted to bridge the gap between the two. I have read all the pieces of lore. But it does not negate the fact that they don't even feel the same.

Reach was the biggest battle in the Human-Covenant War. Why Bungie made it feel like we were fighting for some no-name Outer Colony world is beyond me. The game is fun and the campaign has its moments but the missed potential is glaringly obvious.

We all know it is. But, I think it is something to do with the fact that we are a Spartan 3 team (besides Jorge).

Unlike the S2's, we weren't in front line combat for most of the time. We were always on some special op, that in some remote place. This is part of the story, as building a city on a Forerunner artifact can lead to... problems.

ONI had foresight, they decided to build Sword Base in the middle of nowhere. The Viery territory was deserted, and that was where the entire game took place.

I'm not saying there isn't logic behind what they did. I'm saying it could have been so much better in such an obvious way.

Instead of flying around Frigate Savannah and Anchor 9 we should have flown around MAC Platform X and defend it from various threats. While in the background we could have seen the main battle for Reach.

How about instead of driving around the countryside in a farm cart don't we escort or seeing off civilian transports we escort top military and ONI personnel away from the chaos and towards relative safety.

Little things like this. You could keep your "behind-the-scenes" aspect of Reach they were going for but also stay true to what Reach really was.

I mean, look at what we simply SAW. Even when the Covenant started glassing the planet in New Alexandria we didn't even see nor hear of the UNSC fleet. Firstly, they said 60% of the fleet was en route to Reach (which is cool) but we never hear about or see it again?

Sorry, no matter how you want to slice it the campaign's storyline (and arguably the gameplay) sucked. It really did.

Before Reach the game came out if you were to ask a Halo fan what Reach was about they'd tell you it was a big, important battle that the Covenant ultimately won. Would they guess it was about Spartan III's driving around the countryside in a farm cart?

Probably not.

No linked gamertag for starters. Commenting about matchmaking K/D ratio when talking about the books and campaign.

Why are idiots like yourself even allowed on these forums?

I think it's safe to say it was satire based on K/D checkers.

Even if it was, it's a shame people have to resort to it instead of joining on and adding to the topic at hand, which admittedly I also failed to do.

Rectifying that though, I would say Reach is canon but mainly because I have not read the books so I have one story line to follow instead of trying to make one override the other, or mix and match ect.

That and Bungie have stated Game canon > Book canon. No matter how unhappy it makes you, and until 343i say otherwise, Reach is canon.
