Unkown forger. Fear my laser face.
Hit me up

I am currently working on a independent video game and I wanted to know what to do and what not to do.

My question is what did bungie do right in there early years.
not just with halo but with every game they ever made.
I am not old enough to actualy be part of there early generations of games but plan on buying them down the road.

This is a huge question, you can always read further about Bungie around this site, about their story, publications, news articles, breaking in, videos, and even the latest "O BRAVE NEW WORLD" video should answer all your questions. (If you use the search function then you might find even actual posts from employs)

Vengeance only leads to an ongoing cycle of hatred.

I want to let you in on something they did wrong. Reach. I am just like you. Preparing to work on an Indie game, etc. This may not apply to you now, but don't establish a piece of canon, then go back, destroy it, and replace it with something worse. That's just me. And be careful with innovation. It's good to bring something fresh and new, but not gimmicks (like AAs) that just disrupt gameplay.

I have found it easy to work with just a friend on our game. It just seems like the more people you have the more you slack off trying to organize them. Also is it good to test out very early versions of your product.

Yes, of course. Test as much as you can. I'll save you the frustration: Your first versions are going to suck. But, that's okay. It's all a learning experience. You just have to keep making each version better and better. Keep testing, polishing, etc. They'll get better and better once you identify the mistakes/bugs/etc and just keep on improving. Don't get discouraged, just keep chugging along.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

:)
The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

They made games that they found fun to play.

I love Halo and video games. I started a business called "70MGame", I setup LAN events, tournaments, and Midnight Launch Events. Check us out in the link below.

I grew up playing Halo CE and have never stopped loving it since. I have one of the biggest Halo collections you will ever see with the crown jewels being life size statues of Master Chief, Kat, and Emile. Im hoping to have the entire Noble Team soon as well as other Halo statues

This video should give you a really good idea as to how Bungie made such a great game. I think it would be a great stepping stone for you

There's plenty of stuff that Bungie did right...don't think I could list it all, but ultimately I think one of the most important things is making the game you (not what Bob the neighbor down the street wants or Steve, the uber-lite, "pro", competitive, MLG-wannabe wants, but you) want to make, that's always been the way Bungie has done it, and I think it's worked rather well for them.

I have always belived in this and in my world is the biggest reason I want to make games in the first place. get ride of everything you don't like add what you want. Just to be able to control your own experiences, what else could you ask for.

We are soldiers without borders, our purpose defined by the era we live in. This is our Heaven, and our Hell.

What did bungie do right?

Halo
Halo 2
Halo 3

What they did do right in their prime?

They kept things simple.
They kept things fun.

Some of the so-called "improvements" in Reach could have easily been done in CE. But they didn't. Why? Because they had people who understood balanced gameplay. The plasma pistol overcharge may have been abused by the player (so they made AI use it more), but it wasn't the only option nor did it have to be used on Elites.

bungie did almost everything right with their games, all of them are fine.

people cry and complain about how halo sucks when it doesn't, its halos community that sucks.

if bungie did nothing right and always mess up everything like what cry babies say then there wouldn't be halo reach, halo 3 even.

be smaller then him! 1000G
!

Made the first two halos. Had a competitive sandbox not influenced by new players, but core gameplay. They made the game their way, not one that's accessible by new players.

When you make features in a game aimed at new players, those new players tend to not be happy in the first place with that, and they leave quickly. Leaving only the hardcore fan base to stay around.

Think Ce, and 2, both games made just for gamers. Halo 2 had no noobie features except a bit more auto aim than h1, but it was amazing by its self. And no one left halo 2 for years. It was a goldmine.

CE was just a treasure in pure raw skill.

What they did right was make two games for GAMERS, not new gamers who just want a game to play for a month.

Reach is my house!!

I don't know if you know this but Bungie made the auto lock system that all shooters use today. Like when u aim and your gun follows the enemy. that sort of stuff. if u come up with something that helps define a genre then you will make mad bank bro

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

Maintain a level of quality within a highly anticipated trilogy[Halo].
In all departments.

Gameplay
Music
Atmosphere
Etc.

Note the word [trilogy].

However Reach wasn't a huge fail. It shows how improved the netcode could be, erm forgeworld being a amazing feat. If anything it showed us how much a financial success Halo was due to brand power alone, not due to the quality of the title but the title name itself.

"I'd have to say Lockout was the worst"

I'm pretty sure that's heresy, and that it conflicts with the "Code of Manliness" - page 792, section E subsection D paragraph 3.2. I suggest you relay that statement.

One of the things that sticks out to me which I remember them saying in O Brave New World, is that they were and are fans of their own games. They make the games they make because they want to play them. They listen to their community because they are a part of their own community.

Make a game that you think is awesome and chances are others will to. To serve the masses is to serve no one.
