well what about the longsword fighter that MC takes off in at the end of halo 1? i'm not aware of any animals named the longsword

Human fighter planes are usually given two designations: their official title, and sort of a "nickname," I guess you could call it. Example: the F-14 Falcon. The Longsword is probably its nickname, and is easier to remember than its formal desgination.

* How is it that "Fat Chance" and "Slim Chance" mean the same thing?
* If you choke a Smurf, what color will it turn?

Has anyone noticed that many covenant vehicles have names to do with Ghosts?

Check this out. Taken from dictionary.com.

apparition, appearance, banshee, daemon, demon, devil, eidolon, ethereal being, haunt, incorporeal being, kelpie, manes, phantasm, phantom, poltergeist, revenant, shade, shadow, soul, specter, spirit, vampire, vision, visitor, wraith, zombie

human vehicles are named after animals. Warthog, pelicans, scorpian.

and also the anticipated mongoose ATV. All animals.

wow. you just realised that?

What about the "Scarb" that's not a Ghost-y name

you mean Scarab? what else do you call an insectoid looking walking tank?

i think they only give ghoulish names to the floating flying vehicles.
perhaps if an uber-scarab turns up in halo 3 it will be called a...erm...scorpion is the human tank...so...err...wasps fly...grasshopper sounds too small...fire ant? termite?
well, forgetting the name, it could be in the final level. yes, a termite trying to unearth (perhaps if most of the ark is underground and only the bit in the trailer sticks out) the ark, and chief/arbiter must stop it

Stats Don't Mean Anything If You Cheat

All the big cruisers etc just seem to have random names ie. the Ascendant Justice for covies and stuff like Gettysburg and Iroquois (i think it's spelt like that) but all the ground based infrantry vehicles have a pattern

Each individual ship always has a different name. Thats how it's always been. I guees 500 years in the future it still hasn't changed.

See any similarities in these names:

Grunt, Jackle, Elite, Hunter, Brute, Drone?

They're almost all descriptive words. And, they are all (as other people have said) human designations for the different races.

Would that be a sweet boss or what? a Gruntjackleelitehunterbrutedrone HAHAHA
