Understood, accepted and agreed.

But.

Would there be a problem, an issue, any downside if forum topics had buttons allowing members to link/post/share that thread with their various networks? Similar to how many blogs and/or news sites have icons/buttons allowing a reader to Tweet, Facebook share, or Google+1 the url of the story (in this case the thread).

This would allow members to externally advertise a discussion or topic to their social networks, encouraging further visits and participation from individuals who may not be regular or frequent visitors and encourage growth and participation in the Bungie.Net community.

I am not suggesting making this site one byte more like Facebook. I am asking if there is any downside if these forums were to leverage members existing social networks as a method to draw wider attention and awareness to this site and these forums.

Things on B.net would be nice to keep on B.net. I don't want things telling me to share it elsewhere, especially since I would never use them.

So... you can't bear to read an entire paragraph that might dare to disagree with you, lest you actually have to think about someone else's opinion? Not the brightest bulb in the box, are we?

I don't see why this would be a problem, except for the inexplicably stubborn few who see any change as an attack on them. I wouldn't use it, most likely, but others might.

That's a good point, and I would imagine that (if implemented) it wouldn't be garish or intrusive, certainly not "telling" anyone that they should (or have to) share that thread with anyone.

I am imagining something similar to the single line of icons above the author's line in this article, tastefully done to reflect the Bungie.Net experience but allowing a member of this site to email, print, FB like, +1 or Tweet the thread that is of interest to them (and that they think may be of interest to their followers).

A simple linking mechanism is probably keeping some of our more "followed" members from telling their online audience about a topic that is of interest to them. Imagine the traffic and attention a topic would get if (for example) it were to get a Tweet from Nathan Fillion or some other well-followed member of this site. Making such Tweets or other links a simple one-click measure, could increase traffic, membership and participation in this community and this site.

As you can see in this article (and with all articles) there's a simple share option at the bottom right of the article. I think that would be a nice sleek feature to see beside some forum posts.

However, have you ever seen anyone share a thread to a social network before? :-)

This is a video game community site.

This is not a blog and it should not get linked with any type of social network site. It'll turn the whole damn thing into one big attention whoring fest.

I have, and know that it was a manual process. The member had to copy the URL of the Bungie thread, visit the social networking site of their preference, log in, create a new entry/post/tweet, paste in the Bungie URL for the thread, and if there was no auto-shortener, visit a 3rd page in order to shorten the URL for posting/tweeting.

But I have seen topics from this site, these forums, on Twitter, Facebook and even (shockingly, since it is used so little) Google+. DeeJ's ride alongs would benefit, anyone's classifieds advert, and if a topic was of interest to a member, it would possibly/likely be of interest to a good portion of their "followers".

An easy method (just an icon bar underneath the subject line on page 1) to link out and share a link to the Bungie topic, would (IMO) be a no-cost, high-benefit, no-downside feature for the site, the community, and for those "out there" that have never even heard of this site and our members.

It looks pretty good in this one. I wouldn't mind that.

And this site would remain nothing like Facebook. But it would allow a member to invite non-members (or part-time members) to visit, read, and perhaps join this community when they see that there are discussions taking place that they (based on their following someone who shared the link) may be interested in and previously unaware of.

If that is the impression that I am giving, then I apologize. What I am suggesting and attempting to describe is nothing like the Facebook site.

What I am trying to describe is based on the observation that members use The Flood to bring up external items of interest to the members of this community. They create a new thread, make a link to a news article, a blog, a YouTube page, and they say "this is interesting, please take a look at it and let's talk about it here."

I am wondering why we don't have a similar way to externally bring attention to an ongoing topic here on these forums by telling people "hey, there is something I find interesting going on in the Bungie forums, please take a look and if you are interested please join in on that discussion".

But sir, if you put peanut butter in my chocolate then it would be.....not as chocolate as it used to be!!! It can't be good!!!!

Also, what features of "more like facebook" don't you like? Specifically? Would you like to be a grown-up and actually express the reasons behind your discontent rather than "I don't like things that're diffrnt!!!!"? Or....?

Sorry, OP, but many people who frequent this forum are allergic to the word Facebook. It makes them incapable of discussion ideas on the basis of merit but rather makes them compare it to even marginally related things that Facebook does.

I almost wonder what would have happened if Facebook had Halo stats on it first.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I think it would be cool if Bungie's next game had stats be able to be embedded on Facebook.

Like being able to link your Bungie.net account to your facebook account or something. I am not a facebook user but it could be interesting.

No as it would take away too much traffic unless there is just stat viewing on facebook and you have to do rest on bungie.net.
