Understood, accepted and agreed.

But.

Stopped reading there.

Bungie is a place for the men and women of their community to chillax and socialize.

making it more like Face Book would be.....not Bnetish.
Agreed.

Op, its ok to think about how bnet would be if it allowed integration with facebook, twitter, google+ but in all realms of reality, this idea stinks...If bnet allowed social site integration we would would have a cluster-blam!- of random people here who would post nonsense sentences and would just be a floundering mess. Pretty much the apocalypse in terms of whiney little brats posting "CoD is so 1337!!!!!! HAL0 SUCKS BAWL5!!! Y U NO MAK3 G8 GAM35!??!!!!" Yeah not my cup of tea thank you.

This is an example of what I warned about - say the word "Facebook" and you bring along a lot of assumptions (such as crappy UI of lots of Facebook integration plus some questionable Facebook UI itself).

Your second point, though, well... wow.
Posted by: THE SALTY CHIP
Because first of all, pasting those share buttons all over the forums would just look plain ugly.

Second, these forums don't need more people coming here. It's already active enough.
If we attract Facebook users here, the only thing that they'll do is bring their ridiculously stupid posts along with them (Not that the flood could get any less intelligent, that is). And trust me, I've used Facebook enough to know that we wouldn't want the people that use it regularly to come here.

And what about my second point? I mean, it could be more active, but like I always say, Quality > Quantity.
I don't think that there is enough people on these forums at certain times and I would enjoy that they are active, I don't like coming on late at night and seeing that this forum is died... Quality over Quantity is usually the case, but I like having a lively active forum full of discussion.

I don't see anything in the original post that mentions adding a "like" feature to the forum.
The concept of 'liking' something promotes it, which is exactly what is being proposed, additionally in a way that would promote it more externally.
Similar to how many blogs and/or news sites have icons/buttons allowing a reader to Tweet, Facebook share, or Google+1 the url of the story (in this case the thread).Hopefully this could clarify, unless you wish to argue semantics, which are largely irrelevant as the point is being properly communicated.

I think that DdD is seeing my suggestion and not being distracted by an idea that I am not suggesting.

I am not suggesting that Bungie.Net adopt a "like" feature along the lines of Facebook's. I am not suggesting that someone "liking" a topic on these forums does a single thing to the topic. No change to the thread, no bumping, no trust system credit for the OP, participants, posters or those who "liked" it. If a member of this site were to click on the Facebook icon (or the Google+, or the Twitter, etc.) it simply brings up a submission form to that service with the URL for page 1 of that topic autofilled into the tweet, like, +1, or whatever that icon links to. The thread remains the thread on this site if it gets 10,000 likes on FB or none. No change to the discussion except that the topic itself is "advertised" on those service(s) that a member chooses to share the link with their followers.

I am not asking for, suggesting, or thinking of making any alteration to how these forums work. I am suggesting a method to externally advertise these topics THROUGH these other service(s) to an audience that may (or may not) be aware of this site, our forums, or the types of discussions we have.

If someone were to create a really good ongoing discussion in (for example), The Flood about...... how this community compares to other game developer's fan communities.... what would be wrong with, and unacceptable about expanding that discussion to invite in people who are not (currently) aware of or member to this site? What's so bad about someone easily telling their Twitter followers that DeeJ is doing another ride along? What would be the downside of a simple way to share out a discussion/topic of interest to people who can then either check it out or not based on whether or not they are interested?

Are the FB, Twitter, Digg, Google+ and other icons SO offensive that it would enrage someone if those icons were tastefully put at the top of page 1 of any new thread on this site?

We members are CONSTANTLY advertising and trying to get our fellow members to "look at what I found on the Interwebz!" What is wrong with us having the ability to tell the Interwebz, "Look what I found on Bungie.Net!"?

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

I would definitely prefer discussion worth having than the usual stuff we've had around here.

Edit: Users, y u no address my legitimate concern on the second page?

Spread the love...

I'm not totally against integrating other social networking sites, but in the end I'm just going to say no.

Why?

It would just change b.net, in my opinion. We've created such a loving and close-knit community that it'd be hard to, I guess, "open us up" to the rest of the world. But if that's what the Web Team decides doing...then by golly, I'm all for it!

I'm giving it an 84% chance that it will occur sometime between now and when they release their next game.

My suggestion means that the only people who would see your "like" would be people who follow your FB and they would only see it if you posted it TO your FB. Your liking of the topic, or +1'ing, or Tweeting would not be entered into the Bungie.Net discussion (it would be a distraction, spam, un-invited) but it would put a link to the first post in the thread allowing you to "invite" your social followers to check the topic out and participate if they were inspired to do so.

  • 03.12.2012 6:08 PM PDT

As an additional point, threads are already being advertised on social networks without an idiot apocalypse. Check our twitter feed for one such example.

Maybe you can look into that "no https in markups" thing now that it's bitten you in the butt?

Oooooh, you edited! Oh well, back on topic.

I don't see how this could be at any way harmful to our community or the forums. I can understand that "new=different=change=resistance" and if there is a real and clear downside to this, I would withdraw the suggestion, but for gamers looking to get a group together, advertise their group, share something cool, or otherwise "spread the word", this is just a request for little more than a couple of scripted buttons to make it easier to get the word out about things that happen in our community.

That is completely false. One does not simply attract Facebook users. If social networking qualities were implemented into the Bungie.net site people would not come here just because it "resembles Facebook." The great thing about most social networking sites such as Twitter, Google+, and Facebook is that you control your experience. Is a certain person filling up your Twitter feed? Unfollow them. Also how many of these Facebook users that you dislike would even come to a video game forum such as Bungie.net? Adding social networking features to the site wouldn't bring unwanted visitors.

I completely agree with Achronos. Social networking does not have to necessarily include "like" buttons or "photo albums". As long as the features don't turn into attention whoring tools I think they could be very useful to share interests and ideas between users.

Besides obvious advantages of likes promoting better discussion, bnet has always been far too insular. There are very few forums that have as many millions of posts as bnet but the site doesn't really get any online recognition or have the sort of pull webcomics and Valve has/had, even though the topics are all largely transient and the audiences are (probably) similar. I think spreading notable threads from the forums to the internet in general would benefit the quality of social interaction here. There are a lot of threads from other forums on site-specific and general topics that have been immortalized but that doesn't happen here except in a self-contained way.

Dealing with an influx of new members should be easy enough in theory when that happens. More forums and subforums for one. Also, encouraging post quality and continuing existing threads.

As far as other features within the site, I think it would be interesting to see a sort of cross between profiles and forums. Like, links to people's favorite threads or posts on their profiles. So you could get an overview of a user not by stalking or looking up posts chronologically, or by obligatory favorite lists, but by their highlights on the site.
