I don't see anything in the original post that mentions adding a "like" feature to the forum. The concept of 'liking' something promotes it, which is exactly what is being proposed, additionally in a way that would promote it more externally.
Similar to how many blogs and/or news sites have icons/buttons allowing a reader to Tweet, Facebook share, or Google+1 the url of the story (in this case the thread).Hopefully this could clarify, unless you wish to argue semantics, which are largely irrelevant as the point is being properly communicated.
I think that DdD is seeing my suggestion and not being distracted by an idea that I am not suggesting.
I am not suggesting that Bungie.Net adopt a "like" feature along the lines of Facebook's. I am not suggesting that someone "liking" a topic on these forums does a single thing to the topic. No change to the thread, no bumping, no trust system credit for the OP, participants, posters or those who "liked" it. If a member of this site were to click on the Facebook icon (or the Google+, or the Twitter, etc.) it simply brings up a submission form to that service with the URL for page 1 of that topic autofilled into the tweet, like, +1, or whatever that icon links to. The thread remains the thread on this site if it gets 10,000 likes on FB or none. No change to the discussion except that the topic itself is "advertised" on those service(s) that a member chooses to share the link with their followers.
I am not asking for, suggesting, or thinking of making any alteration to how these forums work. I am suggesting a method to externally advertise these topics THROUGH these other service(s) to an audience that may (or may not) be aware of this site, our forums, or the types of discussions we have.
If someone were to create a really good ongoing discussion in (for example), The Flood about...... how this community compares to other game developer's fan communities.... what would be wrong with, and unacceptable about expanding that discussion to invite in people who are not (currently) aware of or member to this site? What's so bad about someone easily telling their Twitter followers that DeeJ is doing another ride along? What would be the downside of a simple way to share out a discussion/topic of interest to people who can then either check it out or not based on whether or not they are interested?
Are the FB, Twitter, Digg, Google+ and other icons SO offensive that it would enrage someone if those icons were tastefully put at the top of page 1 of any new thread on this site?
We members are CONSTANTLY advertising and trying to get our fellow members to "look at what I found on the Interwebz!" What is wrong with us having the ability to tell the Interwebz, "Look what I found on Bungie.Net!"?
