Subject: Pathways into Darkness 2?... community game projects?

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

I found a link to this gme being made called Pathways into Darkness 2. It is supposed to be a "real game" but what is weird is Bungie still ons the IP to Pathways into Darkness.

What is strange about this is it seems to be made by fans. I am curious, is Bungie okay with people making products/games using their names/copyrights or do people have to write and get consent to make a game?

Their trailer

I do not know if they are charging for the game.

I do think it is super cool that people are expanding on games.

(I wasn;t sure if I should put this in the games forum, the point of this thread was more towards using Bungie copyrighted content to make things).

Who the hell do you think I am?

Haha! ^

It looks like an indie game to me. I don't think Bungie has anything to do with it.

I don't think they are claiming they own the rights to Bungie's material; they're just adding onto it.

Interesting

Story page:
It's happened. On a normal summer day, the president is strolling in his garden, sniffing flowers with his kids. But, outta the mist, a mysterious figure appears in front of him. A J'jaro diplomat informing the president about a creature awakening around Machu Picchu that will ultimately destroy the galaxy, if not the universe. The president dispatches you to Machu Picchu in effort to destroy the creature and save humanity.
oh god...

This is interesting but PID is copyrighted.

I think it would be neat to expand more into past Bungie games but I wonder to what extend you can make new content like that.

So is Marathon and Gnop! but Bungie didn't shut them down over that. I doubt Bungie cares if a bunch of kids are adding sequels to their games.

An example of this would be "Titanic II." Cameron still owns the rights to the original movie, but the small movie company made a, uh, sequel.

I just keep thinking back to the page of copyrights Bungie does not want us to use.

I think it is great but I wonder what rules someone must follow to publish a game like that.

You can copyright the title, not the material. Also, parodies are perfectly allowed in parodies (which is what I'm assuming that is).

[*Please note that anything in my posts is likely to be filled with sarcasm, and should be taken with a pinch of salt. I tend to help people, usually*]

I feel a tad concerned for them having their address on their site. Still, I wish them well. They're pretty cool guys in my book.

I also find it humourous that they've kept their past-members on the site; that's respectful, disrespectful, stylish, appropriate and inappropriate all at the same time!

Regarding fan-games...I believe Bungie's (and Bungie's lawyers) would prefer all fan-made games to be 100% non-commercial and with appropriate credits where credits are due. I would personally try not to do anything that involved any IP that is shared or now owned by other companies, such as the case with Halo and Microsoft.

Pimps at Sea springs to mind as a good example of an appropriate fan game...especially since it has no real legal ties.

Hopefully these guys learn a lot out of their experiences whilst so young. This sort of thing will get them far. Think them naive if you want (I do) but that's all part of it; they'll learn what they need to if they're serious about this as a career path.

"That's about all that can be said for plots, which anyway are just one thing after another, a what and a what and a what.

Now try how and why."

I'm rather skeptical, seeing as they don't seem to have any concept art, footage, or other tangible assets that indicate any sort of progress. It's really easy to "start" a project, but difficult to start putting stakes in the ground if you will.

Further more, projects always take more time time than expected and will always end up less stellar than imagined. Thus, it takes a lot of dedication to the project. It can't just be a case of "we can do this in between watching movies, playing games, ect." or it will never get done.

With that said, I would certainly be happy if something came out of the project, so more power too them. Furthermore, making stuff, especially stuff that's hard to make, stuff that's worthwhile, is incomparably rewarding.

I would think they would need to get consent from Bungie especially if they were planning on selling it. I think it would be different if it were a Halo CE mod or something but this is a whole different game that is taking another company's ideas for their own work. It is an interesting topic.

This project is completely fan made. It is free. No, Bungie doesn't know about it, but I wish they did and give us full control over the IP. We are giving Bungie credit. We are teens, not "kids". But do like the project, we are completing it soon and you will be able to play it.

If they actually release anything it won't be any good.

You're all kids in my book until your at least 25 #oldman

But I must ask you, if you are as indicated part of this project what are we to expect? Do you have any screen shots to release? Is it a whole new story with new level designs, or simple re-imagined levels?

Case and point: don't worry about it. Girls start getting boobies pretty soon, and then you'll have plenty of other things to think about. Being an Inheritor is not a life goal.

This is pretty interesting, I'd like to see some footage of the level design and some concept art for the characters though before I make a final judgement on this project.

I see so you claim to be one of the people making it.

I am interested why you made it in Machu Pichu. It would of been cool to pick up on the immortals story and the 7 years.

I think you should try and show Bungie your visions however.

Looks pretty interesting, just lower the lighting and you might have something there. If I recall, Jason Jones had a map making engine to place creatures and textures so I assume you might of used something similar to that.

A survival mode might be interesting too.

I have pid on floppies but I don't have a old mac to run it. I wish Bungie could release the source code and we can get people like aleph one to port it to PC.
