I recently upgraded internet connections to centurylink's 12 MBps down/5mbps up. Nothing else in the system has changed. I got a new router in with the upgrade but everything (router, xbox, ect.) is still in exactly the same place. Since the upgrade I have found it impossible to play xbox live games. So far I have played mass effect 3 and halo reach, the lag in each was so bad it was unplayable. Issues with lag weren't unusual before but it was pretty rare to have lag this severe.

Web browsing and star trek online seem to still work perfectly.

My speed test and ping test results look pretty good anywhere within the USA. (tested from my laptop on the same network, near the xbox.)

Closest server:

Washington DC (across the country from me, about 2000 miles):

I have tested other servers with similar responses, all tested connection got at least a B grade, until I tried one in Malaysia but I don't think everyone I have been playing with lives in Malaysia. This connection should be more than adequate for gaming but xbox live games have been having major issues.

Im not sure if its had time to update for the new connection yet but halo reach's network status has a warning on upstream bandwith (I think this is due to my old connection having only 512 kbps up), open NAT, and Low/excellent packet loss.

What is wrong with this connection? has anyone else had a similar problem with quest/centurylink?

It used to be alright, the only change was upgrading to a higher speed and the new modem required for that, it should have got better not worse (speed and ping test seem to confirm this, there is much more bandwidth and as low as half the ping form before the upgrade). I can't afford a faster connection right now, I will definitely get one after I graduate college and get a decent job.

The only options were I live are century link or comcast (or one of the totally wireless ones, but they are slow and have a low bandwidth limit). I can't use the old quest router, it was deactivated when the service was upgraded, I never changed any settings on either quest modem anyway. I attempted to use an old D-link router I have for another wifi source but the power brick decided to quit working while it was in the closet.

I know century link sucks but I have had both xbox live and quest (which just recently became centurylink) for at least 5 years and while I often did have lag it was rarely as severe as this recent lag, and never as consistent, every game I have played recently has had severe lag. My connection tests also look pretty good (the best by far that I have had at this location) only xbox live seems to have trouble.

The next thing I'm going to try is using my laptop to connect instead of the wifi adapter. The adapter was having some problems not even turning on earlier.

I have them and they suck! But that's not the half of it, what's worse is I cant get better internet because they are the only provider in the area. REALLY -blam!-

PROBLEM RESOLVED: I used my laptop as a wifi adapter instead of the xbox wifi adapter. There is no longer any significant amount of lag. My wifi adapter must be going out.
