Like, there's actually complaints that months after a 25+ year war, the humans and Elites aren't BFFs 4evar. I don't think the book is perfect, sure there are flaws. But the way you see people talking about the book as if it's the end of Halo canon as we know it seems absurd to me.
That complaint is more focused on the characters and their motivations. Telcam's motivations make sense, Jul's and every other "bad" Elite don't. And let's not forget the terrible treatment towards Halsey.Unfortunately I don't have my copy of Glasslands with me at the moment, otherwise I'd go back through and take at the Elites, I'm sure I'll be able to get a better sense of how they're written on my second time through the book.
The Halsey thing is really interesting to me. aI mean, ever since Fall of Reach we've obviously seen Halsey as a hero of the war, but when you step back and look at the big picture, the things she did are honestly pretty bad ethically. Kidnapping 6-year-olds and submitting them to tremendous physical and emotional pain, putting them through dangerous medical procedures that killed or crippled a good number of them? And the clones left for the parents? Obviously the results speak for themselves, since the Spartans did end up saving the galaxy, bit it's not difficult to see why the characters in Glasslands might have seem pretty strong objections to Halsey's actions.
Did Glasslands pretty harsh against Halsey? Yeah, definitely.
But for the most part (mainly talking about Kilo-Five here), this was a pretty reasonable position to take. I don't think it's an anti-Halsey agenda Traviss is going to shove down our throats for the rest of the trilogy, rather a natural reaction anyone would give to characters in Kilo-Five's situations.
Now, I'm probably being a little overly optimistic here, as I do have a bit of a problem with the whole Mendez-Halsey conflict that seems to have sprung up out of nowhere, but I'm trying to withhold too much judgment until we can see how the rest of the trilogy plays out. I'm pretty confident 343 knows what they're doing with Halsey's books, and i really don't think they'd let her do anything to damage the Halo universe. But we'll see.
Woah, I just realized how long-winded this post is getting, sorry. I just really like being able to have a discussion about this stuff I guess. :P
