I posted this elsewhere but it seems to touch on a number of threads so I have re posted it to see what anyone else thinks. Please reply

The ark obviously refers to the earth, thats why the covenant visited it in Halo 2 and were surprised to find humans there. The ark I think means that earth was once a refuge for life in the galaxy where the makers of the ring worlds preserved life from the the flood the last time the halo rings were activated. From this 'seeding' all life arose on the earth. Anyone familiar with geology will have heard of the Cambrian Explosion where the number of life forms on planet earth exploded into millions of different wierd and wonderful designs............ and noone is really sure how it happened. I suspect that Bungie will somehow tie this into the storyline and it turns out that the covenant and mankind evolved from the same starting point but became very different organisms physically but shared a similair degree of intelligence.
I would much rather the story followed a scientific / Darwinian thread than a Neo Christian, pseudo religious ridiculous one

I agree with this completely, but not necessarily your belief of The Ark being the starting point for both (although that would make sense). The rings only destroy sentient life that has enough biomass to support the Flood. Small microorganisms are neither sentient nor massive enough, so I believe the Forerunners just placed a whole mess of them across the universe prior to activating the rings and let nature run it's course.

Well possibly the fore runners seeded earth with the life forms that were left over. Collecting primitive lifeforms from all the devestated worlds in the galaxy and putting them on the only viable nursery planet left ... Earth......The Ark. This would better explain the Cambrian Explosion...

its like a large force of win going through fusion, thus creating a chain reaction of a huge asplosion of win destroying any fail within its awesomeness.

Good Point!
