Subject: B.net Janitors?

Gamers Anon

Achronos: And what's this about a "design team" I've been hearing? Apparently stosh is so awesome he's now considered a "team".

I was reading through this thread and came across this post. It got me thinking about the possibility of B.net janitors. Like the ones on 4chan. B.net Janitors would have a small amount of the powers that mods have.

Some such powers could be:
>The ability to lock threads
>Force hide posts
>Move threads
>More power when it comes to reporting posts

What does everyone else think about this idea?

4chan is a little different than Bungie.net. I'm fine with what we have.

I don't know, The Flood is trying really hard to change that.

If Bungie trusts someone, I don't see a reason they would give that user less permissions than a Forum Ninja. I think the two moderator roles work well.

I disagree. Right now on the entire front page of the Flood, there is only one thread that I think should be locked. I know that's not saying much about the posts, but the Flood isn't that out of control.

And the regular mods are pretty swift in banning/locking anyway, so.

Sounds like a mod...

But sure why not... What's the worst that could happen?

Citizens of Me! The cruelty of the old Pharaoh is a thing of the past. Let a whole new wave of cruelty wash over this lazy land.

Hear the word of Pharaoh. Build unto me a statue of ridiculous proportion. One billion cubits in height......that I might be remembered for all eternity!

And be quick about it!

So like a moderator only they can't ban you?

I'm okay with this.

I think those are the base powers for moderators, but it'd be cool to see the indoctrination of shadow mods.

shadow mods sound so cool. That is something that suits it a lot better.

Do not panic, or you will fail.

It'd be kinda funny, since the mods are called "Ninjas", when there could really be a subclass of mods that actually act like ninjas.

Can't resist.

Releasing glorified moderators with crippled tools unto these boards sounds unneeded (to an even greater degree with the basis of content filtering) and inefficient. Tough to say much more with the status quo.

Heavier report weighting might be worth talking about, but not when limited to one usergroup. For lack of a better example, some boards have a simple flag system - the more accurate your reports, the more they matter. Maybe not completely ideal applied to bungie.net, but food for the mind.

Basically members that they can't fully trust so they give them a few little tools to play with? Nope.

Who says they trust anyone? I don't.

They would be the step below Ninjas, think of it as an initiation into becoming a Ninja. If Janitors prove that they can handle these tools then they could be trusted to be Ninjas.

If anything they would be more trusted than your Average Joe.

Well general activity levels on this site are down if anything, so we probably don't need anymore moderation then what we already have. Of course, this will probably change when the new ip is announced.

I actually support the idea. It makes sense to me. It's like a midpoint between the average person who can just report, and Forum Ninja who can ban. And 4chan isn't the only forum that uses Janitors.

I think that there should be some level in between Janitors and Ninja's. It could just be that Janitors can just flag posts, and hide then posts from the thread, and just let a Ninja deal the ban appropriately. And then that's it. No locking ability, just the ability to hide the posts and flag them. I think it's a pretty good idea.

But, then again, everything is up to Achronos, and if he doesn't think it's a good idea, then it's not going to happen. And he almost never changes things up.

This would add needless bureaucracy to the moderation process, as the Ninjas would have to spend time working through the posts that have been hidden or locked by the janitors. Do not want.

Does this eye look healthy to you?

Looking evil has its downsides. I lack eyelids and cannot blink, as a result my vision is blurred and my eye is really sore and itchy.

Well, the needless bureaucracy would only come from a poor choice of Janitors who aren't really familiar with the rules and can't distinguished a user that doesn't need to be banned from one that does.

Bungie.net has always been moderatorated at the discretion of the Ninja's, and even with Janitors it still would be. As long as you don't have a bunch of mouse-trigger finger Janitors, ready to report for the slightest issue, then it probably would make the moderation process quicker. If the Ninjas don't think the user should be banned, then they can just skip the report and move on. That's it.

It could be done where your Janitor powers are only tied to certain forums. This way boards that aren't commonly moderated by the current Ninja's and typically a low amount of traffic (like Halo CE and Halo 2, Crimson, etc.) can be flagged with one report and moderated appropriately. This way low traffic boards can be moderated easier and have less spam/offtopic posts.

But like I said, the Janitors would really have to be carefully selected. Someone who has been on the forums for a few years, and know the difference between what users need to be banned and the users that don't need to be banned.

Keep in mind the flagging/hidding posts is just an idea.

The moving option would be usless, you're not supposed to move threads for a reason.

Something along those lines would be a terrific idea.
