Subject: B.net Janitors?

So like a moderator only they can't ban you? I'm okay with this.

I'm not. What's the point of being able to lock up a thread, and not banish the user? It doesn't necessarily stop a user from remaking that, or another useless thread.

If Bungie trusts someone, I don't see a reason they would give that user less permissions than a Forum Ninja. I think the two moderator roles work well.
I actually agree with (at least the first half of this). I've never understood why you would trust someone with a small number of powers but not all of them. If you trust someone to have power over the forum, why limit what they can do?

It's basically a training or probation period.

See, I don't get that, or at least, that shouldn't be the reason why Janitors should exist. Being a mod essentially means you're trusted enough to be a level-headed person with a good understanding of the rules. By the way, what training is there? All mods here have been posting for a while before they were even asked to become mods. Probation is usually given to people after an offense.

I'm with you there on probation, I don't see why it has different meanings like that. And I meant more that it could be used as a "training" period for people who are seen as responsible and potential mods. You'd pretty much be giving them slightly higher authority and an intro to being a mod while also tidying up the forums.

Cave Johnson here, we're done!

PS: If you are reading this comment while imagining my voice, don't panic. That's just a side effect of the testing.

How about just that? Would basically fit the role of a janitor.

I think the mods, we currently have, do a good job of cleaning up the forums. Especially, Qbix, he loves that trash talk.

Seems like a good idea. They could supplement the current Moderators and refer issues of higher importance to them.

123 Obvious Truth states that to moderate to maxium efficency of availbility you would not use banishment. Further training seems relevant.

Just give more trusted members a more powerful report button. This could be done automatically and would supplement the mods, not just create bureaucracy.

This could be based on your trust rating, or accuracy of previous reports.

Posted by: Izak609
Trust rating isn't an accurate measure of how much Bungie actually trusts a member, as well as automated and unsupervised. Forum ninjas and Bungie employees should be pretty trust-able; but under the trust system, plunty of each have base titles as low as member or heroic member.

I wasn't saying it was a perfect system, but it would be a way to weight reports more heavily from people who generally behave.

I think the current system works fine. The weighted system might be worth a try; but I don't think it'll pay off.

Why not just make them a Forum Ninja?
Most forums implement Janitors as kind of like a training process for being a moderator, and some forums just keep them to help moderate low traffic forums boards.

Janitors almost never have the ability to ban people, just the ability to flag/request bans and hide the post, then hand it over to a moderator to care of. That way, if the Janitor was a bad selection, they don't cause havoc on the forums.

I'm a janitor on a forum I go to often, and a moderator on a forum that uses janitors, and I think it makes the process a whole lot easier. Low traffic boards get more moderation, and in general makes things more efficient.

That sounds pretty cool! How about something like this?

I find your post somewhat contradictory because Bungie already practises the method of trusting somebody but limiting their permissions via the two moderator roles we currently have in place.

I'm not saying every mod should be a master mod, just thought it interesting that you should be against a concept but seemingly in support of it at the same time.

As for the topic in general, if done right I don't see how it could hurt. For example, why not give a large number of members the simple power of locking threads? That way they can stop spam from getting out of order.

But then again, mods would likely have to make sure janitors stay in line and it could get messy.

Very unsightly. Worse than the forum ninja's horrible text.

Ideally, Janitors would have no special title or flair and would look exactly like any other user. They should also refrain from speaking officially in threads and just stick to simple silent moderation. That would be the best method. It would help weed out the ones who want the position for the power or attention.

Yeah, actually that does sound better in a few ways as you pointed out.

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

It acts as a semi-mod. Or a "Mod Jr." if you will.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”
