Subject: Mods Should Always Post Why They Lock A Thread.

This man, this man right here put it so eloquently that I actually cancelled my own 2000+ word long post.
/slow clap for respect

The person who said participating is important, not winning, obviously never won anything.

Title for Reference.

Apart from the the threads that get locked for obvious reasons, ninjas should always post before they lock the reason they lock it.

Some threads get locked, and sometimes I'm left with the curiosity on why it was locked, because it could have been for various reasons. I know mods do this sometimes, but there are others that they just lock and leave.

For example, if your thread gets locked for some reason, wouldn't you like to know why? I've had to pm mods before to ask them exactly why my, or other threads have been locked.

So, do you think this should be a requirement for all mods?

Discuss.

Ad Infinitum

There were at least 15 locked threads in a row the other day. I was also curious as to why the majority of them deserved a lock. I think some mod just got pissed off at the Flood.

Parody threads are not the case, obviously. It's kind of logical that they are getting locked for that reason, so explaining on each thread they are getting locked is pretty redundant and time consuming.

I'm talking about individual threads.

Not always, and that's not the point the OP is trying to make. If a post is locked, and it's not ban worthy, the creator of that thread isn't going to get a PM. They nor the general populace will know why the thread was locked unless a mod posts their reasoning for taking such action. I do think that mods could do more to reply before locking non-obvious rule breaking threads.

I know it's more effort, but I think it's better off in the long run if people see the reasoning so that they don't make the same mistakes.

Meh, I suppose.

I think a tagging-feature saying who locked it would be better because then it can be all handled via PMs and the thread isn't bumped.

But while that doesn't exist.... eh. It could be nice.

OP - You're a dumbass with the reading comprehension skills of a second grader.

Can someone tell me what's wrong with these two, this made me LOL hard.

Sometimes it's locked because the thread got derailed.

This is actually the stupidest thing ever posted on B.net:

Why does everyone hate Halo 2? Maybe its because its the worst game ever next to mario.

I always thought when a thread got locked that was not banworthy, it was because the topic itself went completely off topic and strayed away from the OP's thread to the point where it could not be saved.

It'd be nice if they did that; but I wonder what the moderators think about being forced to explain themselves every time a thread breaks the rules.

It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who has given us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial. And it is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves the flag, whose coffin is draped in the flag that allows the protester to burn the flag.Father Dennis Edward O'Brien, USMC

Agreed with op.

There are multitudes of reasons on why threads are locked. It could be something as simple as a repeat topic that exists on the same page. Most of the time if a thread is locked, it's pretty blatantly obvious and most people can figure it out for themselves.

If it's not as obvious, they usually post about why it's locked. It's fine the way it is, given the pace of some forums on Bnet.

If it matters so much, why can't you ask the mod?

I agree. I really wish I knew why my last topic was locked. Might as well PM a mod.

Were it so easy...

You can't tell which mod locks your thread, unless of course you are banned for said thread. Then it becomes more obvious and you can ask them then but in that case it should be obvious.

I lol'd at the absurd miscommunication that occurs whenever dibbs post something. Perhaps his brain is so highly evolved that he can no longer clearly communicate with lesser life forms, even among his own species.

A required dropdown box with a few generic explanations for every locked thread has been thrown around for years. I'm not against the idea but (and I'm assuming that you want a reason accompanying the locked thread so you don't make the same mistake) the rules are pretty easy to follow and understand.

Just...think.

Edit: Also good thing you included the "discuss" or else I would have been entirely lost as to what I was supposed to do.

Two makes there more than speakers.

Most of the time it's for an obvious reason. But as for your example it would be nice to get an explanation as to why it was locked, as to not stir any kind of controversy.

Yax is a shining beacon in these dark times. You should all strive to be more like Yax.

Mods will tell you they are discouraged from doing this because it bumps the topic up to the top but I think this is a rather lame excuse. As long as they aren't going on a massive locking spree, bumping locked threads to the top shouldn't be a problem because they'd sink rather fast.

Not to mention the Web Team are competent enough to add special features in that don't bump threads. Or maybe even a little box at the top of the original post explaining why it's locked. (They can do the latter already just using their edit tool)

So yes, it would be nice to have this addition but it's unlikely to happen. Also, it considerably adds to the ninja's workflow and they might find it quite tedious.
