Most of the time you should get a warning why it was locked. Else you might want to read the rules carefully and try to relate your thread to it.

Make Bungie.net More Enjoyable: Read & Follow

I'd assume there is a decent chance that the raw volume of threads that mods lock itself renders this extra nicety an unrealistic ideal - I'd imagine there is simply not the time. The moderation team on Bungie.net is an unpaid, volunteer effort with limited time resources and I would imagine - again, with the possibility of being wrong - that the triviality of most of the threads they lock fails to bring about the impetus for such individualized treatment.

And the Shadow fell upon the Land, and the World was riven stone from stone. The oceans fled, and the mountains were swallowed up, and the nations were scattered to the eight corners of the World. The moon was blood, and the sun was as ashes. The seas boiled, and the living envied the dead. All was shattered, and all but memory lost, and one memory above all others, of him who brought the Shadow and the Breaking of the World. And him they named Dragon.

Tom has... discouraged us from doing this, so naturally we don't. Though if the need arises I will post a little comment explaining why the thread was locked, it just doesn't happen very often.

There comes a time in every mans life... and that time is not now.

You take orders from Tom T?

If it matters so much, why can't you ask the mod?
Were it so easy...

You can't tell which mod locks your thread, unless of course you are banned for said thread. Then it becomes more obvious and you can ask them then but in that case it should be obvious.

Oh. I've only been banned once and it was because I logged on while someone had been banned on the computer - I thought it sent them a message who because when I asked about it I was told "I didn't ban you, can't say why or who".

I propose a default thing that tells the person which mod banned them and leave it up to the person to message the guy.

Then again the mod'll get a lot of "U BAND ME I TEL BUNGIE MY DAD WORK FOR THEM AND UR A WORTHLESS GUY WHO JUST BANS PEOPLE HAHA NOT EVEN REAL BUNGI EMPLOYEE". Kinda thing.

I can be quite... persuasive.

Basically this. As we are volunteers I don't think it is reasonable to expect such a high level of clarity and accountablity.

This would add additional hassle to the process - unnecessary hassle when the majority of locked threads can be easily placed by users within any interpretation of the rules. Similarly it also makes any lock a public issue, which people can then contest, when it is easier for our sanity to deal only with the OP (where we will clarify further if needed), rather than listen to their friends or other backseat moderators.

Sure it makes sense to us normal people, but keep in mind both Tom T and Qbix are crazy over-the-sea dwellers. Norway and Britishland. So clearly they are backwards.

Yeah, that's pretty lame, Qbix. Tom's demands have absolutely no effect over me outside the bedroom.

  • 03.19.2012 5:15 AM PDT

Does anyone even read these?

You're cheating on me?!

Editing the OP would be nice at least, but if Achronos advises against it for some reason then you can't blame them.

To moderators, when it's down to locking threads, it's all about efficiently. Ninja are suppose to remain stealthy at all time. Once he finds his opponent, he can either just say "Hi, I'm a ninja, and I'm going to kill you with my bansword!",
or he could simply dash down and quickly decap that user's head without any sign of warning.

What I'm trying to say is, it's their choice whether to leave a comment before they lock the thread to state why it was locked, or not.

  • 03.19.2012 5:32 AM PDT

I agree, and they should also tell why the MLP thread in The Flood made by DeeJ is NOT already locked.

To counter what Tom T says here (Tom T = Tom T and Tom = Achronos) I don't really think the fact that we are volunteers is of any real relevance here. If this was something we practiced then we'd just have to adjust and get more moderators. The thing is (as previously mentioned) that it isn't worth the time, even if this was a paid gig.

Sanity and other issues put aside; in 99.9% of all cases it's easy to see why the thread was locked, in the remaining cases you can always PM a moderator and ask why it was locked. And as I also said, sometimes we take the time to post and explain (as when threads take a total turn to -blam!-).

Because of that, the thread is simply too valuable to be locked anyway.

They are going to bump a locked thread that we are going to see there for awhile and it gets annoying...

You can't stop it. It's in the flood, it's unstoppable. You can only stop it when nobody post in it, or have that thread achieved for more than 30 days.

Well that's subjective, but I'll be sure to remind you of it when I next have a thread locked.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

EDIT:
Wow Qbix, don't be a hater.

Don't be silly. It was overdue for a lock. The thread had served its "purpose". Props to Qbix for actually locking a thread made by an employee. That takes internet-balls.

Nice balls, Qbix. Nice balls.

“Strange,” mused the Director, as they turned away, “strange to think that even in Our Ford’s day most games were played without more apparatus than a ball or two and a few sticks and perhaps a bit of netting. imagine the folly of allowing people to play elaborate games which do nothing whatever to increase consumption.”
