Reach ( it was missing the "halo feel")

  • 03.22.2012 4:34 AM PDT

Halo reach.

  • 03.22.2012 5:49 AM PDT

I'm so disappointed reading the majority of answers to this question. Halo 2 was far superior to the newer games and took so much more skill. My 6 year old little brother can kick ass at Reach. It's just so sad because I was gaming when xbl came out and Halo 2 was just outstanding. Now it's just a thing to talk about in the past. :(

  • 03.22.2012 7:24 AM PDT

Reach is garbage, end of story.

Note: I'm only referring to campaign.

I'm inclined to say Halo 3 due to it introducing the most horrible things to the Halo series:

-excessive enemy AI killing by various means such as a missile loaded Pelican that doesn't seem to notice me when it fires it's barrages
-invisible barriers in various accessible places
-teleporting friendly AI
-slow movement speed, weapon switching and reloading, and kill times

But I'll say Reach was my least favorite Halo game.

Because the demo was severely limited.

Because the Wraith is a -blam!- vehicle.

Because I tried to take one part of the demo mission and customize it like hell and failed. It took me hours just to setup blockades.

It was here that I encountered the horror of the plasma pistol overcharged bolt, which sucked for me and was too godly for the enemy, being spammed by them every second. It was here that I discovered that the enemies had semi-omniscience, 1/2 of the Covies being dropped off by the dropship looking up in my direction even when I was clearly hidden in their line of sight. It was here that I found that troopers are a way Bungie trolls us. How could these freaks be so sluggish?!

I didn't enjoy much of combat (killing Elites with conventional means all the time = boring, killing Grunts and Jackals from far away without any allied support = pathetic) and the only reason why I'd even venture to that particular mission again is so I can see Elites crouching all the time and so I can assassinate Ultras.

Bottomline, you can't make something great with Reach's campaign without sacrificing your sanity. Reach is the reason why I don't love H3 as much as I used to. Reach is the reason why I play CE much more than any other Halo game. It is my enemy 90% of the time to the point that I can tell which person is a Reach fanboy, which person has a bias against Halo 3, and which person has a reasonable opinion.

If you're passionate about the thing you're talking about, I'll always lend an ear.

Reach.

The direction they went in this game put me off Halo.

  • 03.22.2012 10:31 AM PDT

Halo 2's campaign was chopped due to deadlines, and I still thought it was awesome. Not to mention that it pretty much was the reason for Xbox LIVE. My least favourite was Halo: Reach.

ODST

Never felt a connection to the ODSTs or Rookie and the Mombasa Streets level is just copy/paste in almost every area.

This. I agree completely.

Reach had to be my favorite. The story was compelling out of all the stories I have seen in a Halo game (I actually found myself caring about Noble Team and felt a good deal of sadness as each one of them died), and I really enjoyed the level design and the flow of the maps.

The musical score was as good if not better than the previous installments, and it tied in and changed per the situation much more smoothly than in previous Halo games.

Despite what some people say, I think that the Armor Abilities are a great improvement of the Equipment used in Halo 3 (though I can see where some of the abilities needed adjusting).

Over all, while I love every Halo that Bungie has made (they will always be the best at it, at least when taken into account the huge, steaming pile that 343 has shown us so far...), I find that I enjoy Reach the best out of them all.

Halo will always be my favorite game series, and if 343 just destroys the Halo we've all come to know and love (which they're on the fast track to doing...), then I'll just play Bungie's Halo games until they shut off the 360 servers like they did with Halo 2.

Sinome maruvan ar Hildinyar.

I loved them all, but my favorite is Reach, not about story wise but gameplay.

I think it's very hard to pick one, I guess it would have to be Reach - but saying that LNOS is one of my favourite levels Bungie have ever created.

OT: Halo 2.

Honestly, I think ODST, had nothing to do really with the story as much as the series.

My campaign ranking:

Halo CE >= Halo 2 >> ODST>>> Halo 3 >>>>>>>> Reach

CE - Perfect and balanced and fun.
H2 - Fun and as engaging as CE.

ODST - This one was in the right direction, even if the silenced weapons were just aesthetic and the enemies still Brutes. Weapons were accurate and returning weapons were buffed and recoil was used but controllable unlike Bloom. Combat was pretty hectic but survivable. Even more balanced Jackal snipers. Banshee with hover!!

H3 - Call it a Reach prototype. All the bs things in Reach were spawned from H3. However, it is better than Reach since it is far more similar to CE. H3 brought back multiple things from CE, like cutscene manipulations with AI, a large megabattle, checkpoint hotspots.

Reach - I've only played the demo but that's all I needed to see to know that:

-friendly AI are terrible
-enemy AI is cheap (Jackals) and op and overrated (they are NOT smart). I can land in front of an Elite and sometimes he doesn't even see me. Just because they are faster and fire aggressively and more accurately and crouch when their shields are down and react quickly to needle rifle shots and fire from longer range doesn't mean they are smart. All of that could have been implemented in CE.
-damage is absurd, fall damage heavy landing stun kills fast gameplay, slow reload times, slow movement speed, slow melees and grenade throw delays
-most weapons are useless because of Bloom, lack of shield breakthrough, and freaking enemy fire making it impossible to sustain fire without losing your shield
-combat is repetitive
-dropships are kill stealers, party crashers, absurdly op (they have absurd accuracy)
-no point in taking cover in combat because all enemies swarm over you, not just the Grunts and Jackals. I have to stay back and DMR everything that's not an Elite
-dead bodies and dropped weapons get deleted fast showing that graphics got more emphasis than gameplay
-bs gameplay: mission crucial Falcons being destroyed, dying during a scripted ride, being splattered by scenery items from the sky
-Microsoft only cares about the money. The Reach Demo was severely limited and it is the #1 reason why I hate Reach. With a demo like this, who the hell would buy the full version? No save and quit, no customization (yet you get the prompt but you can only access emblem and armor color), no Theater, etc.

Basically, LNoS is excessively scripted, features a pathetic mission start that can be easily skipped and/or completed by Noble Team, space battle is overrated, and in-game cinematics are ridiculously long and cannot be skipped.

Anyone who says they like Reach, try playing it differently and tell me that you can make something spectacular out of it. I can't. I've tried. I dedicated hours to it (had all sorts of videos and no one noticed). Whether it was allies in a Wraith targeting me when I was out of the map or the stupid 10 second countdown appearing under the dock or a team of rocket launcher troopers blowing themselves up or the blockades I spent hours setting up being moved by the Covenant dropship and rocket launcher troopers or the plasma rifle bolts from Elites being unavoidable while my plasma rifle bolts graze their shields, there was nothing worth doing in Reach compared to H3.

Halo 3.

In campaign terms because it was lacking majorly in story department, it's removal of Arby as a playable character, and the lack of a real last stand for Earth.

In multiplayer terms because of mediocre maps, equipment, constant BR spamming. Don't know, it just wasn't fun enough.

There is a certain point of tolerance that should never be reached.

Halo: Reach gets a lot of hate. While I'll admit it wasn't as "epic" as the trilogy, I believe part of the reason is because of the use of new characters, and lack of mystery.

Reach felt really good on its first playthrough, and even now, its still a blast.

Do you remember the feeling you felt at the end of the game? Several times in the game I felt sick. After years of reading about it, actually seeing a glassing was disgusting. The sense of despairing I felt after Jorge died was a intense. I think watching the planet fall was something Halo hasn't really done before. My only complaint is they should have had more missions form before Jorge died. I am convinced that a majority of the people who hated the campaign would have loved it if they had more time to develop bonds with Noble.

"May God have mercy upon my enemies, because I won't."

I am merely a soldier in the massive army commonly known as the Internet.

ODST, It was a great concept, the voice acting was great and Marty really went to town on the soundtrack, but for me it just didn't have the same quality as the other 4. (Though Firefight is amazing!)

Vote for me for a free cookie.

Halo Reach

Campaign-Completely random and had no story line until The Package. The AI are also horrible. When Jorge and Kat died, I instantly knew everyone would die. I even chuckled when Kat died. How does one headshot with spartan armor with shields and a helmet kill you?

Multiplayer-Armor abilities is completely stupid. No skill is required. It's all about who has the better ability at the situation. 70% of the maps are bits from forge world and all the others were from the campaign except dlc. 343 ain't making it better either.
