its like a large force of win going through fusion, thus creating a chain reaction of a huge asplosion of win destroying any fail within its awesomeness.

After the recent happenings, I have decided to create this "Group Immunity" thread, a guide on how to keep your group safe from conquerors.

____________

Who is a Conqueror?

A conqueror is usually a member that has a grudge against you or your group. They will usually try to gain your trust and ask for you to promote them. Once promoted with admin powers, they will usually boot you and other admins and either keep the group for themselves or boot each member one by one.

____________

Tips on Preventing Uprisings

Use these easy to perform tips on keeping your chapter safe from conquers.

* Never give out powers that include Blacklisting, Booting, and promoting, as they can abuse these powers to take down you and your group. Even if its the most trustful person you know, their account can be used by a conqueror to perform their tricks.

____________

* Have a Backup Admin.

Say what? Let me explain the procedure. First, make a security role with a "low" name, such as Rookie Member, or Newbie Member that has powers that include blacklisting, booting, and promoting. Then create a second account only to use in your group. Give it that security role. If someone does hijack your group, pull out your second account, and kick the threat out of your chapter.

____________

* If your group was conquered, contact Achronos immediately. He may help, he may not, but it is better safe than sorry. Mods/Ninjas have no power in a chapter unless handed to them.

____________

* If someone else’s group that is closely related to yours has been conquered, lock memberships in your group (They can't join unless you approve) if you didn't already, and review your member list, make sure nothing changed. (That’s if you didn't follow the above tips already) You never know if you’re next.

Good guide. This should help a lot of group leaders.

To be honest with you, I don't see a problem with giving out blacklisting powers... It's easy to undo a blacklist is you have admin powers, as you can just undo the blacklist.

Other than that, good guide...

Yes but since you have admin powers, you can edit and delete blacklists... you're pretty much immune...

If they succeeded at taking over your group, they would demote you, then Blacklist/Boot you. It happened to Guardian Hunter today. Though he got booted, blacklisting would have the same affect.

Their both the same, just one is longer.

That's why I only dissagreed with the blacklisting part... everything else is spot-on... it's just that on it's own, blcklisting powers aren't much a threat... just an annoyance.

They can blacklist you...

Not if you have Full Control Powers. They could not blacklist Admins what so ever.

Now how does a group get conquered. Basicly Carelessness is the problem. One founder gives full control privs to those he trusts, in turn they give out fullcontrol privs to their buddies, and so one till it reaches the guy with the shady buddy. Now he if full control user. He makes a security roll for him. Then kicks out all the admins just like a Dictator starting his new regime (Sadam Husain anyone)

Other ways are less comen but equally at the fault of the founder. Founder dose not secure his net passport and logon thus signing on as you and runing everything and gettign you blacklisted. But seriously if that is the case you got a bigger problem then bungie.net. How is you credit history?

Other ways is giving out change security roles, which can promote other members. but other than that it is really hard to break in. As for hacking into Bungie.net which is illeagal, well they have all of Microsoft Tech support hunting them through the web backed by an army of Lawyers.

Basicly secure your password (no brainer) and DO NOT give out full control privlages to anyone This is one of the most talked about issues in Chapter Founders. I am sure for any more questions we will be glad to answer them.

It appears that some of the group takeovers are occurring (in whole or in part) due to trusted people having their accounts compromised, I would also recommend these two additional steps to consider.

For anyone with Administrative rights (actually this is a good idea and good practice for everyone).

* Make certain that your MS Passport password is unique, (not related to other passwords), strong and long. (minds out of the gutter you naughty rascals)

* Having a password that is changed at intervals is also helpful.

A standard corporate password policy is that every 30, 60 or 90 days a new password that is at least 8 characters long, has at least 2 upper case letters, at least 2 lower case letters, at least 2 numbers and at least 1 special character. Some policies include a password that does not include any part of the username, or if possible does not contain any traditional English words.

Using such a password can make your MS Passport account much harder to either guess or grind with brute force.

These may seem a bit overboard, but if you value your digital "possessions", you will take steps to protect them.

Late Edit: insert important word that I apparently missed.

I never change my password because my e-mail displayed is different so I suggest doing that in addtion to what you said(Although displaying your e-mail is bad for many reasons(spam and viruses in particular)so don't really do it)

Just a quick question, but what happened at MBT?

There was someone who figured out someone elses password who was high up, and told another member to promote someone, he did. They guy demoted everyone else and tried to take over the group. Luckily we had had a takeover drill somewhere around one year ago, so pretty much everyone knew what to do. So shortly after the Takeover attempt someone sent a message to Archonos who intervined and the group is back to normal...

2B || !2B - Why don't you look Inside the Machine?

Or you could sum this all up and do what some groups do...don't hand out power at all.

But really nice guide though.

For Carnage, Apply Within.

I have returned from the Untamed Lands. MOAP is dead.

Nice guide.

In my group I only have one position for Full Control. And that's me. I decided that thanks to the new chapter features, such as no two roles may have similar permissions, that I would split the co-admin into two roles. Security for the forums, and the other for posting news, editing, and stuff of that nature. Giving someone else full control isn't really necessary. Especially since the "booting" permission is only accessed to one person.

Official Town Drunk of Sandwichia. Nation of the Flood.
MBT - Impossible Just Happened
* How is it that "Fat Chance" and "Slim Chance" mean the same thing?
* If you choke a Smurf, what color will it turn?

XBOX User Space profile

* Make your password strong

Lets look at the possible characters you are able to use.

Upper and lower case letters - The MS passport password system is case sensitive. This means that if you put a capital letter in your password, you have to have it as a capital letter when logging on.

Numbers - Numbers make it difficult to figure out your password. Lets say you have 4 numbers in your password. 1st a hacker must find out that you do have numbers in your password, and that there are 4 of them. Then he must find the correct combonations of numbers. 10^4 = 10,000 combinations of numbers.

Now, You should have atleast 2 upper, 2 lower case along with atleast 4 numbers along with a password that is 8 letter +4 numbers long. thats 12 characters.

Nwo the 8 letters has a possible 6 lowercase(I don't reccomend having more then 2 uppercase letters just so it's easy to remember) 2*26 = 52 possible combinations of 2 uppercase letters. 6*26 = 156 combonations of 6 lowercase letters. Now a hacker must also find out which letters are upper and lower case 52 combo's of uppercase * 156 combo's of lowercase =7056 combo's of both upper and lower case letters.

Also, a hacker must figure out what order the 4 numbers come in. 10,000 combinations of numbers * another 10k for the order of the numbers is 100,000,000 (100 million).

100 millin + 7056 = 100,007,056 different possibilities of passwords for a hacker to figure out.

Theoretical probability of them finding it our is

1
---
100,007,056

I say good luck to them.
