The Assault Rifle's display doesn't really shoot that much light, neither does the Battle Rifle's. In a Sneaking Ops, ODSTs would use Silenced SMGs, no displays.
So we're going to limit highly trained special forces to using a single weapon, that fires a pitifully weak round that is laughable on shields.
Why not just have the display be optional? Preferably on a forward mounted rail, for CQC situations? Again, the bright display is NOT good for night ops.
So its pitch black, and you move your rifle up as you're low crawling, boom, you just lost your night vision in that eye and are blinded for 15 minutes as you regain vision.
And clear magazines are useful because they do, in fact, stick out of the gun, at least a bit, which is where the transparent part is.
If a magazine slid all the way into an assault rifle you wouldn't be able to get it out... In combat, its important to be accurate, but you aren't counting every single shot.
Heck, upon engaging the enemy in Afghanistan US Army squads will frequently saturate an area with squad firing and 40mm frag rounds. The -blam!- you goin on about?
What im saying is in combat you dont have to know EXACTLY how many freaking rounds you have in your gun. A decent idea is all you need considering it is actually easier to reload from a half empty mag rather than a dry one.
And that a bright ass screen on your gun can give you away at night or at the least blind you if you make the wrong move with it.
