First of all, if you’re a true Halo Fan, you will know that Elites and Prophets were once enemies. They waged wars on each other. If you want to know more about this story, you will need to look at the Limited Edition DVD that comes with the Limited Edition Halo 2 package which is strangely still being sold in stores. They united with other alien species throughout the universe with the soul proposes of destroying humanity, finding all the Halos, and to begin the Great Journey.

My theory is that there is a conspiracy within the Covenant. The Prophets still hold a grudge against the Elites. They want to destroy them and any allies they have. The Prophets plan is to “kill two birds with one stone” (Destroy humans and Elites). To do this they will activate the Halos but not until they are safely inside the Ark with their allies. The thing that Prophets want is power.

In the beginning the ex-general Elite is put on trial and found guilty. The Elites are still loyal to the Prophets at this point. The Prophets use the Elite to take down the “Heretic” but they still warn the Arbiter that in the end he is going to end up dead anyway. The “Heretic” is actually right. He says that the Prophets have deceived them and the Great Journey isn’t really a Journey. He gets all this information from 343 Guilty Spark who is the Oracle and knows everything about the Halos activation.

In the first Arbiter mission at the end while the Arbiter is talking to 343, Tartarus takes 343 away before he can speak any more to the Arbiter. This tells me that the Brutes are also in on the conspiracy. Throughout the story you can tell that the Brutes and Elites don’t like each other. As the Prophets “loose their trust in the Elites” they replace them with Brutes. The Prophets use the Elites failures as a motive to make the Brutes at a higher ranking. This triggers the civil war within the Covenant.

At the end of Halo 2 when Miranda removed the index, 343 Guilty Spark said that the Halo was communicating with all the other Halos and now every Halo is ready for activation. He also said that they can also be remotely detonated via The Ark. I’m assuming that the Prophets already know this. That’s why they went directly to Earth and abandoned everyone back at High Charity.

The Arbiter is to the Elites what the Master Chief is to humans. They are both leaders of their own kind with the same objectives: to survive.
“The enemy of my enemy is my friend” I do believe that some kind of truce or alliance will occur with the Elites and Humans.

That's a good theory except I don't think the MC is the leader of the humans. I think he's more of a "poster child" to boost morale because of his awesome capabilites. From him, the humans see that the Covenant aren't immortal, but are just very hard to kill.

That's my 2 cents.

I don't think the Arbiter will activate the rings. He knows their purpose and what they can do. What he needs to do now is find a way to go to the Ark (wherever that might be) and stop the Prophet from fullfilling his objectives and deactivate the rings

  • 05.26.2006 7:38 PM PDT

Halo 2 lives on.

You know what I think would be funny is that the arbitor and his forces defeat the prophet and his forces at the ark but then a tired grunt will sit on a ledge and activate the rings. That would never happen but I think that would be a funny alternate ending.....

Obviously there will be tension still between alien and humans. they have the same goal of stopping the prophet from reaching the Ark but they might try to achieve it in different ways. But look at how Miranda, Sergeant Johnson and the Arbiter are working together. If Johnson can work with them then anyone can.

Did you bother watch the cutscenes or listen at all or just play? They had a freaking Cival War!

  • 05.26.2006 9:42 PM PDT

Since when was wiping out Humanity the reason for the formation of the Covernant.
Humanity probably hadn't probably even discovered fire by the time the Covernant was formed.

Humans are just another alien race that got in the way of the "great Journey"

We all know about everything else, this topic is just you stating what we all already know!

That's probably because it's not 100% correct.
The Brutes are working with the Prophets to remove the Elites. (as they always have been)

The covenant use a smiple caste system of power. (as stated in Halo: The Fall of Reach)
The higher Castes literally walk over the lower ones. The Brutes see themselves as the highest Caste, not the Elites. (besides the prophets that is)
There is a major shift of power in the timespan of Halo2.
As seen in the cut-scene towards the end, the brutes are replacing the Elites as the Royal Guard. This is what I would consider a "turning point" in the attitude towards the Elites by the Prophets. They are turning their backs on them.
I wouldn't expect the Humans and the Elites to be "buddy buddy", but I would expect them to work towards the same goal, killing the prophets, and the rest of the covenant with them.

you just about summed up every theory that i've been thinking of since... well since i finished halo 2. and i've gone thru a ton of theories since then. most of them getting trashed. however, 1 problem: Guilty Spark does NOT say taht the remaining halos can be destroyed via the Ark. He says taht they can all be REMOTELY ACTIVATED. which im guessing woudl also inlude an auto-destruct sequence. but what im wondering the most is whether the Forerunner artifact in the trailer says that the Ark was activated or not.
I'm also wondering if that is even the Ark at all. I've always thought that maybe the Ark was either on or IS the moon? But I also know that (in religious history) there has always been an ARK of the COVENANT that has granted great power and stuff along those lines. And it has always been somewhere in Africa, sometimes in Egypt or something, but in africa nonetheless.
But i also noticed that the guys at Bungie said that the trailer takes place about 1/3 the way through the game, and that makes me think that there is NO WAY that the Ark was ativated already. Shouldn't that be where the final battle takes place? ya know with the Chief, the ARbiter, the remaining Spartans, the humans allied w/ the hunters elites and grunts, all that good shtuff.
wat do u guys think about the connection between the Ark of the Halos and the religious Ark of the Covenant?

That is very good insight into the story. It sounds reasonable but one question, if the prophets can see into the future, wouldn't they be able to tell if they were going to win or lose? Or am I wrong? Also, in the trailer of Halo 3. The big thing that opens up would be the rings starting. Fun Fact: the big thing is on Halo 2's Containment level in the sky.
