Ahem, this is my theroy concerning Cortana:

I would have been your daddy.
I was thinking, perhaps this line refers to Cortana--or more specifically, her daddy.
Now we all know that Dr. Hasely is Cortana's "mother" but who is her father?

I think that he is Durandal. I know that there are no canonical connections between Marathon and Halo, but think about it. IF there were, he WOULD HAVE been her daddy. After all, the new super AI's (of which Cortana is one) are designed to have "emotions" and therefore imply that they are more than just code, etc.

(on a side note, maybe they designed the AI's to have a limited 7 year lifespan so that when the AI's went rampant like they had planned, they could see the course that would play out, and as a fail safe, have them die after 7 years, but anyway back to the point)

Going with the above statement, since Dr. Hasely let ONI clone her brain to make Cortana, she is, in effect, her mother. And since Cortana is obviously rampant (there are subtle hints in BOTH Halo games, and you can choose a RAMPANCY symbol in Halo 2, and the whole ilovebees thing was about Rampancy) then her other half--her father--WOULD HAVE been Durandal. Hence the saying, I would have been your daddy.

After all, isn't Durandal the AI most famous for helping out his human counterpart (when necessary) and also being rampant?

All in all, I think this theory is at least worth a look....

you know you may be onto something there... i've been trying to figure out that line forever haha
although i never really thought Cortana is in a Rampancy state ( if your refering to the halo3 trailer i suppose she was just far away) which brings up another question how could she talk to the master chief from soo far?

SPOILER ALERT - IN CASE YOU HAVE NOT READ THE BOOKS

Remember that AI's are described as having a limited lifespan. It is said that most AI's only last about 7 years. Sooner or later, they simply think themselves to death. It is also stated, however, that Cortana was different / more advanced than other AI's, so they can either use the "lifespan" concept or disregard it.

Also, Cortana has been hanging out with the Gravemind. In the next-to-last board, Cortana describes an alien intelligence "inside the ship that is fighting back." She assumed it was a Covenant construct, but it could be something that screwed her up.

Lastly, in the first book, when we originally are introduced to Cortana, it is very specific that Cortana has a connection with the MC due to her being based on Dr. Halsey and she is said to have sworn to herself to never do anything that would harm the MC out of guilt for what happened to him in his childhood.

Bottom Line:

I don't believe Cortana is 'evil' in Halo 3. She is most likely disturbed in some way, or perhaps simply damaged. Maybe she might seem to be twisted or corrupted, but in the end she will end up being the Cortana we have grown to love.

Not an "Evil Cortana"....maybe just "Naughty Cortana"....which would really be cool, from a 'dark side' perspective....
