Why would the Forerunners create a weapon that kills all sentient life in the universe, if all they wanted to do was to kill the Flood?

"The installation was specifically built to study and contain the Flood", hence an outbreak would be controlled by activating the ring, but why kill all the food?

All the sentinent life in the universe is the floods food.

Killing the floods food kills the flood.

Yeah that's kinda what I just said....

But why not simply kill the Flood?

The flood is a parasite, too small to kill. There is a theory that thats why races were reborn, as the ark as the thing that goes around and bring them back. Basically all the ingredients were kept that you need to make the species but a machine to mix it together...ill see if I can find that theory...

But anyway the stuff to make the species is too small to kill, so thats why life was created again. But then theres the Ark of the Covenant theory...the Ackerson theory...all kinds of theories.

They couldn't. The Halos were a last resort thing. Everything they had tried didn't work. The only thing that could possibly seem to stop the Flood was to kill their food.

Killing the flood is an insanely difficult challenge because of their ability to reproduce when there is food availible... pretty much it would be impossible to kill every single one.

I am...whimsical today.

Maybe they couldnt. Perhaps they had the technology to kill other things, but not the Flood. The Flood infestation could have been so overpowering they had no choice but to kill everything, and stop the Food that way instead of working on a way to kill the Flood.

because the flood are an unstoppable life force, There are trillions of the little parsites stretched across the universe, Its pretty much impossible to kill them all without starving them

Kill themselves. Basically they said "screw this! This sucks we die they get another person." and fired halo.

You dont kill them with no food you "incapacitate" them. Its in one of the books...probably Flood...but anyway they were shoved away by the sentinels and whatever else the forunners left behind and contained them to study.

seeing as the forerunners are mysterious beings noone knows why they would innihilate humans
but by activating a halo it would destroy every human on teh face of the earth, killing flood and basically, there would be nothing in existance
just ....a bunch of....space......

Youre not even on the same page as us. Humans arent the only species at the time unless the covenant species just popped up.

Think of it as trying to kill off the entire species of mosquitos. It can't be done, they are a pest. The only way to kill them is to take away their food, which is our blood, which is to get rid of ourselves entirely.

They had sentinals, the flood back then may have been the little dudes. Why not send uninfectable machines to kill the flood. Or did they have some objection to that.

Ok so I'm going to try and sum up the replies: The halos kill all life because the Forerunners couldn't kill Flood spores, right?

But why are the Flood still alive, since the halos were activated once before?
Doesn't seem like that good of a weapon now does it;)

The Forerunners must have calculated that new species would evolve before the Flood had a "chance" to die. Yet both Covenants and Humans came to dinner...

Some specimens of the Flood were kept in containment on the Halos. That's why there are still Flood, even after the Halos were fired. All of the "loose" Flood were killed off, but the ones in containment were set free (we think by the Covenant, though other sources lead to someone else entirely), reproduced, and created the outbreak that is occuring the games.

ok so the point is that to kill the flood means to kill the sentinals and nobody knows where they live
kill every single covenant and kill every single human
PLUS every other thing living in the universe
so its alot easier just to deal with the flood
