There has been a lot of serious speculation on these forums concerning the plot of Halo 3. Many of these theories will probably turn out to be wrong (although i've read some really interesting ones in the past), and Bungie studios, in their infinite wisdom, will have fooled us all and the game's release in 2007 will come as a revelation to all of us. However, the purpose of this post is to establish and gather all of the knowledge we currently have about Halo 3 and its storyline. Each point should be followed up with supporting evidence.

I'll get us started:
Point: The covenant have visted Earth/The Ark before.
Evidence: In the multiplayer level Midship, the Earth can clearly been sen from the ship's windows. It lacks signs of human habition (no city lights, MAC guns etc.), which may be the reason that the Prophet of Regret was unprepared for a fight when his fleet entered Earth space (on their previous visits, humanity was not present)

Point: Miship
That's in one of the ships who are at Earth in Halo 2 (same fleet in Halo 3 and at the end of Halo 2 due to the time warpning crystal)

Point: There are no Forerunners in the Ark
It's been a hundred thousand years, they would've exited with the ones who populated Earth

"What we know" isn't exactly accurate. "What we speculate" would be much more accurate.

Good call.

I made a thread like this a while ago (however, it stuck to what we actually know) and it was hopelessly pushed back to the netherpages of the forum.

I don't think we should be basing anything on multiplayer levels. Multiplayer levels are in no way connected to the storyline and should therefore be no ground for any, and I mean any, speculation about the Halo 3 storyline. Hereby I rest my case.

Knowing Bungie in their infinite powers at cheating and misleading us every single time (may I be the first to congratulate you guys with that) the E3 demo is very meagerly based on the storyline. But speculation is a good pasttime until we see some real in-game footage.

And one thing, what exactly is Cortana saying. I just can't make out what she is saying. And since in the Halo 2 E3 demo Bungie only recycled the voices, maybe we should speculate in what situation Cortana might say such a thing. We must remember she was stranded in the Covenant Capital together with floodthing (sorry about the names but it's been too long ago I've been playing any Halo 2) So: how did Cortana come to earth?

Fair point. What I was tying to acheive with this topic more to do with what can be thought of as real, and to try and avoid theorising. My example was poor I admit. Perhaps we should try this again.

Point: The planet Coral is significant
Evidence: Text concerning an artifact on Coral in the Conversations from the universe booklet, and the working title for the next Halo novel is " The ghosts of Coral".

Wrong about the levels, they are all part of the story as well, both location-wise and what they are. Chiron is a SPARTAN clone training complex, ring any bells from the books?

All the multiplayer maps are made from places we can relate to, places we've been and such, and they also hold clues to the future, I.E. Water works, or Chiron (can hear the Halo pulse laser on Chiron..more Spartans on a Halo? Ackerson's secret plans from the book? Read more here)

Cortana:
I have defied gods and demons,
I am your shield, I am your sword [whispers overlapping: your sword],
I know you...your past...your future,
This is the way the world ends

We don't know if Cortana is on Earth in the H3 trailer, she is most liekely talking to Gravemind and the Flood, not Master Chief, don't make assumptions that she's talking to Chief.

If she does return, she needs to return in the In Amber Clad, but the Flood will be here too...

Multiplayer levels are connected to the storyline and they are actual places in Halo fiction.

She was probally talking to the gravemind but if she wasn't talking to the gravemind think how she would have got back to Earth. who was left on Delta Halo 05 in halo 2? The arbiter and Miranda Keyes and Sergeant Johnson and the elites. In halo 3 you may have to be the arbiter and fight your way to cortana and get her and then come back to Earth.

He means we never played in the actual multiplayer maps on story mode, just places extremely close to, and sometimes part of them.

Coag is like the spot in the novels..near the Autum's crash site, going back to Alpha base, the desert turns into Valleys, with high edges, and rolling hills covered with grass. This is a box Valley, and Keyes is taken hostage in one similar.
