Subject: Creating Games a a past time.

I have always been quite interested in making, or helping make, a game as a sort of hobbie. Yet time and time again I find myself scared away by the daunting amount of video, or written, tutorials. SO my question is if anyone would know of a great tutorial on how to start with some basic gaming principles?

--I do know some Visual Basic
--Im ready a book on C :D
--I generally know how to model, ONLY model, things in blender

Thanks for any help community,
World

If you are going to make a video game than you need a better modeling program. Try autodesk, it's great.

I do make animation in Adobe Flash. (currently halo related bungie style)

And I also I'm in a video game fan studio designing a halo game 2-d scroller.

It's gonna be good for my CV!

I recommend picking up a copy of "Learn Programming Now: Microsoft XNA GameStudio" only because of its simplicity, then pick up a book for OpenGL programming and keep finding more books on the subject. What really helps me is picking up retro game cheats and such like my personal copy of Len Albin's "Secrets of the Video Game Superstars" for reading on how the classic arcade games became so popular. Anything for inspiration really.

There's always going to be an enormous amount of video and written tutorials on game design. I know because I'm working on making games for a living. As a matter of fact, I'm starting production of an engine with my friend.

Do you mean C# (read C sharp), or C++? And you're going to have to know more than just modeling if you want to do it as a hobbie.

C is a language too, ya know...

+1 recommendation for XNA. It's a great platform for starters.

Blender is a free 3d modeling program. It lets you create virtual models and rig them for animation.

Okay, cool. Haha, that makes more sense. Thank you for explaining that to me.

It's sad how I look at this and go "this is not about the Bungie Community, why is this thread open?" Probably because I have no skill in game design and I am jelly.

Listen to all the smart people up there, I'll just wish you luck.

Why are you reading my signature? Who actually opens these things and reads them!

And as always, SEND ME A PM. Please. Or really bad things will happen to you.

I'm trying to make a game engine in Java. It's unfortunate that it will never amount to anything great because of the limitations of the language.

2/15/12: Francisco Porras, I'll miss you. Rest in Peace.

Then why are you doing it in java? Why not C?

Start small. Instead of a full-blown video game for the consoles, try creating a mobile app. It still takes a lot of time and effort, but not as stressful since you have full control over management(Unlike developers that have deadlines). From there, you'll have an idea of how the industry works and have a better success rate when designing for console games.

My buddies and I took this route and we're hoping to launch within 2013. PM me if you'd like to help.

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

If you're looking to learn by doing, XNA is a great place to start, but don't forget mobile. There is a very low barrier to entry there, and one or two man operations are much more practical at the scale of a mobile game.

Learn Programming NOW!

I used this book starting out and it was easy to follow and a nice stepping stone even if you have no background in programming.

Gives you some basics and lets you throw in some of your own creativity as well along the way.

Honestly, this must be a joke. Child, listen, stop trying to defend yourself because clearly you are incapable of it. The only idiot in this thread is yourself, and trust me, it is obvious. So, how about you do as I asked earlier and log off, mommy and daddy wouldn't want you staying up this late.

C...?

Memory tells me that there is no good reason to use that any more, but that tends to fail me past 4AM.

Is there actually a reason to be using C over C++ or C#?

I've been working with C# since 6th - 7th grade. It's a really intuitive language as apposed to C++. I'd start there. Microsoft makes it really easy to publish XNA games. You could even publish to steam. Assuming you want to keep it as a hobby, of course. From what I've seen, most AAA companies use C++.

With that said, programming is much more grand than video games. Anything that you learn can be applied to more business oriented jobs. Which almost always pay super well. Just something to think about.

So glad to see how Bungie interacts with the community.

My Best Bungie moment: finally beating all the Halo games on solo legendary.
My Worst Bungie moment: not seeing giant stuffie grunts in the Bungie store.

I just started learning Java and am trying to develop an Android game. There are some pretty helpful tutorials, but you still need to put quite a lot of time in. It can be a steep learning curve when you try to implement a bunch of APIs for the first time. I'm struggling through OpenGL at the moment.

I've been trying it for a while now, it is very helpfull indeed.

He threw down a glove you made the mistake
Of picking it up now you're gone
The choosing of guns or fighting with swords
The choice of weapons is done
He'll tear you apart as soon as you start
You know you don't have a chance.

I'd say start with C++, it's a perfect language for laying out the ground.

Jon's been recommending it since he joined Bungie. I'm gonna get it soon. The only part that confuses me is how to write the actual game.

I working with XNA: Game Studio Express. And I didn't know that C was a language too... Looks like I still have much to learn. Thanks Jonny!
