I figure I may as well rag on Reach again as everyone else that matters already has.
Terrible AI, general bad gameplay, vehicles are next to useless, etc. Gotta say my biggest two gripes are enemy behaviour and canon. A single basic enemy Grunt throws grenades faster and more accurately than the player does. They can dodge every rocket, every grenade, every plasma pistol overcharge. But the player can't. Same thing with Elites. And Jackals. And Brutes. They have near perfect aim and never have to reload. On higher difficulties they don't get more aggressive and intelligent, as they did in CE, but they shoot more and do more damage per shot. Every advantage has been given to the AI, while the player is given none. This indicates something went very wrong during development.
However, that pales in comparison to the "problem" with canon. To be perfectly honest Bungie -blam!- over Eric Nylund and the entire existing canon. Microsoft had to have some rewrite parts of the novels because Bungie didn't want to fit their narrative into the existing universe. It would not have been difficult, as there were multiple places they could have done it. Destroying the Covenant ship, investigating the tunnels, defending the Super-MAC generators, etc. But no, they had to completely -blam!- -blam!- up and pretend they were fitting everything in. S-IIIs on Reach? Before they were implemented? Entire companies dying but still being there? Too old for the companies? Covenant ships on the surface for days with no UNSC response? The list just goes on and on and on.
