Roll the dice, try again.

Apparently people are having a tough time understand this:

I would like a custom avatar feature for users that have join dates from 2001 - 2006. As years go by the next group would unlock this feature EX: 2007, 2008 etc.

I'm only talking about having custom avatars for older members of the community that have been here for a long time. Anything relating to "look at the flood" is irrelevant since 90%+ members that post there have an account younger than 3 years old.

There are many other developer websites and forum boards that use custom avatars. It would be a nice "thanks for staying with us" from Bungie over the years. If an older member DOES abuse this and uploads a bad image:

1st offense: ban and removal of image - courtesy of forum ninjas
2nd offense: bigger ban and permanent removal of privilege.

Tonight is the night that we're gonna lose it
So spin that record Vinyl Scratch, and never stop the music.

There's a reason we can't have nice things.

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

I don't want to see wang here.

In a time long past, the armies of the dark came again to the lands of men. Their leaders became known as the fallen lords, and their terrible sorcery was without equal in the west.
In 30 years they reduced the civilized nations into carrion and ash. Until the free city of Madrigal alone defined them. An army gathered there, and a desperate battle was joined against the fallen
Heros were born in the fire and bloodshed of the wars which followed and their names and deeds will never be forgotten

so. much. abuse. would. occur.

All Mythics should have this ability, obviously.

We should know better, because we are better.

Or you get Coup and net a custom title as well.

Apparently I'm not getting through. From the OP:

Perhaps only for members of the community that have been part for a long time and have a high trust rating?

I'm talking 5-7 year members with a good trust rating.

Like said above there would be much abuse. I mean come on, almost all of The Flood isn't mature enough to handle such a feature.

The closest thing to a custom avatar though would be to make an emblem in Halo that you like and set it as your Bnet avatar.

I play for fun and armory completion. :)

Titling it as "I" implies that you think that you should have one, which people disagree with.

90% of users in the flood wouldn't qualify since their accounts were made in the past 2 years.

I'm talking Elder members. Have been here since Halo CE and Halo 2 era. You really think they would risk getting banned over something like this when they have been apart of the community for such a long time?

Yeah I kinda skimmed it. Apologies.

I do agree though with the idea that you'd have to be here for x amount of time

Coup
This is your answer.

First off, Coup sucks.

Also, you shouldn't try to demonize the community over a few bad apples when it comes to custom avatars. The way I see it, if this specific community generally can't be trusted with custom avatars, then no other videogame community on the internet should, either. (and don't tell me you can't name a plethora of videogame communities that don't use custom avatars)

How would you know that the majority of the community can't be trusted? Have you actually seen custom avatars enabled here for everyone, ever?

  • 03.24.2012 2:42 PM PDT

Who the hell do you think I am?

We have so many awesome avatars given to us already.

I don't see why you would need to put on your own. Besides, they would probably be really annoying.

We're all people, guys. So with people given a privilege like their very own avatar (just like the privilege of having our very own private groups to communicate) there are those few kids bound to screw it up, and we're just going to have to get over it and let the moderators and admins do what they would.

Am I the only one who had a long pause after every word?

In my opinion people who have been here for a long time and don't have many bans/warning should be able to have a custom avatar. Just to make sure that it won't be abused, maybe every time someone changes avatar a moderator has to verify it?

From members of the community that have been here since 2001 - 2006? Keep in mind that this is only for the older members. This would be something for newer users to stick around for. Think of it as a "thanks for being with us" perk that would be unlocked after a long time here.

Coup is terrible. It might not even work with the next site update according to Achronos.

No. Why, it's just a picture..

It's not just a picture. It's an identity. Something that everyone else will notice about you when you write a post. Tons of other game developer websites and forum boards have this.

Thank you for seeing my side of this. Everyone is always going to say something like this would be abused. How do you really know?

I'm still only talking members that have been here since 2006 or older. I HIGHLY doubt they would go out of their way to get banned for uploading some inappropriate image for a one time trolololol fun.

Even if they did upload something bad:

1st offense: Get a ban and removal of the image.
2nd offense: Get a bigger ban and the privilege is permanently removed for that user.

It's really not that difficult. It would add a nice flavor to the forums and seeing everyone's personality. Rather than just ONLy having "Haloesk" avatars. Plus is something as an incentive to keep the younger members like myself around for.

After the 31st the Halo emblems could be considered "custom avatars".

user1 - Where'd you get that avatar?
user2 - Oh, you had to play Halo to get this.
