There's more than a few reasons why video games have such bad writing, for one thing I'd imagine you'd also have to keep gameplay in mind, also technology after all making that bridge explode is hard work and many just don't have the time to hire experienced writers and instead get someone off the street and tell them to write about generic space marines and aliens.

That's why games are usually only successful when the environments and music tell the story, like Bioshock or Journey.

I just wish Bungie hired some good writers for their next game, someone who'll actually flesh out the characters more than "generic black Sargent number 3" and someone who'll use every story opportunity, unlike Halo 3 where half the plot points from Halo 2 were thrown out the door (the arbiters tale).

I just hope that bungie can rise above the pack and finally make a game that both has an original plot and good dialogue.

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

1.) Why are you talking in past tense like you know who they have for writers?

2.) Your standards are probably unattainable.

Who the hell do you think I am?

Are you implying that Halo had bad story?

For a video game, it had an amazing story.

However the characters were bland and underdeveloped, in fact everyone in the Halo games except the Arbiter are kind of bland.

Bungie's problem isn't their writers, who are good, it's the genre. Linear first person shooters have very short campaigns. Halo's campaigns are under 10 hours apice, so there isn't very much time to develop characters. Games with much better character development, like Bioshock or Mass Effect have longer campaigns (over 20 hours) because of the style of game, and it gives them more time to develop characters.

I must go now, my planet needs me.

That's just your opinion bro.
I do agree that it would've been better if we got more to know about The Chief in the game.

As long as they don't pull a Bioware with the ending.

Ugh...

First on a BWU.. yeah, I'm cool.

ODST;MYTHIC Screenshot winner! One of the first to get their hands on the mythic map pack.

Bungie has a super talented writing team. Thing about writing for games, it's much more different than writing for a movie or writing for a book. It has it's own challenges that someone who writes for a movie, or writes for books won't be able to deal with.

You will be launched into the sun by a giany slingshot for such blasphemy. Better get out now.

OT: Bungie has great writters. I'm ashamed to say I wasn't around for Marthathon or Myth and never had the chance to play ONI but Halo (CE, 2, 3, ODST, and yes even Reach) had a great story to tell. Could you do better OP?

What makes you think they don't already have good writers?

So is this thread supposed to be about how much you don't like Halo or how you think Bungie's current writers suck?

Either way, more thought should be put into a thread.

Lol.

You do realize that Halo 2 and Halo 3 were supposed to be one game right? Due to time crunch with Halo 2, they had to split the story in half across two games. It's why the ending of Halo 2 and the beginning of Halo 3 were pretty mediocre.

Given a clean slate, I'm sure that Bungie's writers will be able to come up with something good. Not to mention, they are likely designing the story with future games in mind.

I enjoyed the campaigns from the Halo games, I trust that Bungie's writers will do a great job on their next game.

Now is the time of our unworlding
One final effort is all that remains
And I am not afraid

We fight for the grace of the Mantle
And this time none of you will be left behind

Bland characters? I even love the random marines that join you in Halo! I always feel horrible if they die, and I'll run around on legendary with a pistol if giving them the snipers means they'll live longer. As for the more main characters, they aren't bland. Bungie just didn't focus primarily on emotional development for all characters. Doesn't mean you can't find insightful bits about them when you're playing.

Regarding your "good dialogue" comment, it was heresy!
...sorry.

As long as they don't do any of the love crap they did in ODST it's good.

Any writer worth his salt is constantly drunk and brawling - Ernie Hemmingway?

So, of course.

The Joyeuse IP Formula

Video games had great writing until the Mass Effect 3 ending. >_>

But, seriously, writing isn't just dialogue or scrips in games. When you write for games, you're not writing for an audience. The trick is to write a character that the player will give enough of a damn about in order to keep playing. You're writing an experience, not just a story. Hell, people write environments, in a sense. In a game, we've got a unique opportunity to tell the story through an interactive setting, where other mediums rely on dialogue or written narrative.

It's so damn difficult to get good game writers. You can have an excellent writer who will fall face-flat in game development. It's not like game studios have a "only hire the good writers" button. It's not that black and white.

I think that Destiny will provide them with a new opportunity of new-found freedom to go wherever the hell they want with their game, instead of being bogged down by Microsoft over changing things up too much.

P.S.
It's my 6th Bungie.net birthday!
