I've been playing since Halo 2 and it's amazing how many ways the game has been broken. Halo 2 had a great ranking system... they posted the algorithm online which determined exactly what you needed to do to rank up.
Halo 3 had "TrueSkill" which kept players stuck at level 28 despite winning 20+ consecutive games. Totally different from Halo 2's linear (although exponentially harder to rank up to 50) progression. Plus the social playlist had hidden TrueSkill which made playing well there bad for guests that wanted to try out the game.
Now with Reach, they decided to get rid of rankings altogether. I'm not great at Halo but I like competitive games with players at my skill level. The Arena is garbage as there are only 5 ranks and they reset alot. Some of the worst elements of Reach are:
1. Armor Lock - This would be decent as a powerup found on the map that could be used once. But to have an invincibilty button in a FPS that can be used twice in succession or for 5 seconds and reusable after about 8 seconds is ridiculous. Especially to prevent dying after already being stuck with a plasma.
2. Quitters - Halo's super complex system can't find new players to jump into a game. Why can it do so for custom games? Just get players in their first game in a playlist to fill a gap and a good portion of the games will be salvaged. On top of that, when 50% of your own team has already quit, there should be no penalty for quitting as that game is clearly f'd.
3. Maps - There's a reason why multiplayer maps are different than campaign maps. It's no surprise that the most popular BTB map is Hemorrhage (remake of earlier Halo) and the most fun Anni BTB map is Headlong (remake of Halo 2). Also, the user-generated maps in MM are poorly designed. Atom, anyone? The graphics are way too awesome to have dinky concrete walls everywhere.
4. Spartan size - You can't jump nearly as high as Halo 3 and a short railing is enough to crouch and hide most of the time. Boardwalk illustrates this well. Some people like the different size so I'll leave it at that.
I'll probably remember other problems later as I'm playing such as dying most of the time after getting a bulltrue.
