Someone else created a thread about how we could stop people from posting off-topic threads in Forums like the Bungie community for example.

So I thought about it and thought about a filter system that before the thread was made it would look over it to make sure the post was on topic with the forum they are posting in and if it wasn't it would stop them from posting it and direct them to a forum that they could post in.

Now I know this could possibly take away from the Forum ninjas and if it does, this can be thrown away and forgotten, because I like having them around and they do an excellent job around here.

But I think it would help a lot with keeping the unwanted posts out, but it would only have to be in the places that have specific topics to talk about Like again the Bungie Community.

Now I'm sure this is probably no small feet, But what do you guys think of the idea? Would it work? Or Is it even possible to be Done?

If you have any other Ideas about how we could reduce the number of those threads made Please feel free to share them here if you like.

How on earth would you make a filter that could do that? would it look for specific key words like "Halo Reach"? But then what if someone has a on-topic thread that has the words "Halo Reach" in it? I don't understand how you think this filter would work...

You would have to have a person pre scan all threads... like Tom T

Spread the love...

I think it COULD be possible, but there would be lots of loopholes and such. Also, the system could say "no" to a thread even though it's perfectly suitable for the forum...how would the system even decide?

Overall, I'm happy with the current Ninja system.

Plus, it's not like the new system could post nude pics.

How would an automated system determine if a thread was in the right forum?

Yeah I know Thats why I said would it even be possibe, But if it does find Those Certain Words it could still Give them a list of places maybe to post and then if The Forum Ninjas still feel its off topic they would lock it or people could tell them, But at least it would direct them away from the place it know it shouldn't go.

Also I knew there is no way you could have someone look over that would upset everyone and waist to much time.

That would be something that would take time to invent. This was only an Idea though. Its not something that could be made up over night.

  • 03.24.2012 5:08 PM PDT

OP... have you ANY idea how hard that would be to make? Sounds ridiculous. Sorry if I sound harsh here.

I looked back through the thread again, and I didn't see you say that... But you probably just forgot to.

Anyways, the idea just isn't really something that could be created in a reasonable way.

No no I understand and today or this year I could see this not being done, But you never know someday if someone invents something like this. It was just an Idea I had and I wanted people thoughts on it and I'm glad you gave them

Its in the Fourth paragraph last sentence. Maybe someday though you never know.

I'm sure it could be done, absolutely. But the technology and work that would have to be put into such a system would be enormous and I think the Ninjas are a bit more convenient for now.

I like the way you actually made the topic name an accurate subject line. Instead of making it something like "How would you like a system that filters threads", or even worse "I think that..."

I don't think an automated system would cut it. I just don't see how it could work.

No, its impossible for a forum filter to detect a off topic post... there are enless amounts of word combinations of sentence and ways you can spell words it would not work...

I would prefer nothing hinder the creation of threads.

Encouraging users to read the rules and utilize the search bar is far easier a feat, albeit one with probably less success.

A few ideas:

1. Implement a "suggestions" list that shows up based on the title of the topic, which shows a list of potential existing topics which are similar.

2. If topic tagging were available, upon adding some tags to a topic when creating it, the "filter" could test to see what some of the most used tags are for the forum the topic is being created in, and offer a suggestion to post it in the forum which does match those tags instead.

3. Similar to point 2, test the contents of the post being written to see if it matches with similarly written posts (or tags) within the forum and, if it doesn't, offer a suggestion to post in a forum which it does match. (This kind of thing might be overkill, but I think it would be a really interesting piece of technology).

Didn't read OP, just title.

What happened to relying on people to just read the rules and information on what should be posted where? Maybe people should just have to take a quick orientation to the site via Disembodied Soul.

I feel my previous post was not satisfactory in explaining my position on this idea.

The greatest issue I have with this idea is not the trouble of implementation but rather the purpose behind it. While shuffling off-topic threads is certainly a gallant undertaking, the wording of "unwanted threads" used in the OP has dangerous implications. Certainly unwanted would fall to violations of the rules, but already members are extending this beyond obvious spam.

dazarobbo has already proposed the addition to a suggestions section, indicating that his definition of 'unwanted' reaches to topics which have already been discussed. The question is, if a discussion already exists, perhaps debated long ago, should a user be dissuaded from creating a new topic on the matter? Said issue is not clearly defined by the standing rules, and thus it is left to the discretion of moderators. Should the filter be designed to follow a select moderator viewpoint, or strictly to follow the rules? Or perhaps should it simply recommend appropriate forums?

While I am clearly opposed to the idea as a whole, if it were to be implemented, I would hope that it's functionality be restricted to the rules. Whether this means a clarification of rules, or simply off-topic alterations, it is not for me to decide. While many users believe it is normative to advise people to post discussed issues in the larger sticky thread FAQs, my views contrast.

I do not feel discussions outside of the sticky FAQs (or as I have come to call them, "Duardo Super Threads"(ie: Script/Title threads)) are unwanted. I do not like that people wish to redirect discussion to them. In one manner, it belittles the topic posted, as there is a more 'official' thread on it in existence. Additionally, posting, reading, and navigating these Super Threads is a daunting challenge. Often essential points of discussion can become lost in the sea of the topic's general discussion, and key hyperlinks are often dictated by several sole users managing the OP and subsequent directory pages of the thread.

Ultimately, I want this concept of 'unwanted threads' to be limited to that of off-topic forum posting, and not to deter any more discussion than it would encourage. Also, I have nothing against Duardo, it's just that his General FAQ threads seemed the most ubiquitous when I coined the term.
