1. Use the existing free game engine platforms and decide on device or platform support up front.
2. Focus on story, concepts, artwork, models, textures, sprites, and animation etc more than coding.
3. Decide on a time frame and assign responsibilities, then stick to them!
4. Design, Develop, Test & Redevelop to iterative releases.
5. Test the hell out of the thing. No one likes a bug ridden unplayable game.
Look at Tetris, a simple idea that caught on massively. Look at mario cart on N64, simplistic but damned fun. That is my advise anyhow.
