Dont be angry, I'm obligated to whip your ass; if I didn't you wouldn't be getting your moneys worth.
The following quotes where taken from a final copy of the Halo1: Combat Evolved script. They are not my own words and are property of Bungie studios.
Monitor: Well, naturally, the Flood is simply too dangerous to release and mass sterilization protocols may again need to enacted. Of course, samples were kept here after the last catastrophic outbreak for a study. It seems that
decision may have been an error.
Monitor: The installation was specifically built to study and contain the
Flood. Their survival as a race was dependant upon it. I am grateful to see
that some of them survived to reproduce.
Cortana: You have no idea how this ring works, do you? Why the Forerunners
built it? Halo doesn't kill Flood - it kills their food. Humans, Covenant,
whatever; we're all equally edible. The only way to stop the Flood is to
starve them to death and that's exactly what Halo is designed to do - wipe the
galaxy clean of all sentient life. You don't believe me? Ask him!
Master Chief: Is it true?
Monitor: More or less. Technically this installation's pulse has a maximum
effective radius of twenty five thousand light years, but once the others
follow suit, this galaxy will be quite devoid of life, or any least any life
with sufficient biomass to sustain the Flood...But you already knew that, I
mean, how couldn't you?
Monitor: You can't imagine how exciting this is to have a record of all our
lost time. Human history is it? Fascinating.
Monitor: Oh how will I enjoy every moment of its categorization. To think that
you would destroy this installation as well as this record. I am shocked.
Almost too shocked for words.
Cortana: He stopped the self-destruct sequence.
Monitor: Why do you continue to fight us, reclaimer? You cannot win. Give us
the construct and I will endeavor to make your death relatively painless and...
The previous quotes were taken from various parts of Halo combat evolved, and to me seem to hold an air of mystery that in some ways may lead us in the right direction for understanding what the main plot of Halo 3 will revolve around.
The first two lines spoken by 343 detail important information we already know, but may have forgotten. He says that a previous outbreak of flood lead to their eventual destruction and that a small number were kept for research. This poses several questions. Who were doing the research(Forerunners possibly)? When was it happening? Does Halo serve a dual purpose as a weapon, a refuge center (ARK)? Who built Halo(s), why? The other thing the monitor says is "their survival as a race was dependent upon it." This quote is ambiguous and could be looked at in several ways. Does the word dependent imply that someone or something intended for them to survive, or does it simply mean that without being on the Halo they never would have survived?
Still this raises more questions. If the flood survive by feeding on others and spreading the virus, then how is it possible they have survived on this Halo for so long if they have hypothetically consumed all people/ things doing resarch on them? Does anyone know how long it has been from the time research on flood on the 04 installiation ended, and when we first come in contact with it? If the flood are dependent on other sentient beings to support their existance, they surely would have died and not have continued to exist here at this installation.
The next point of interest is that they Cortana tells us flat out that the Halo's are weapons designed with the purpose of destroying all life and in doing so eliminate the potential for the flood to overpopulate. We are all familiar with the Ark and the Artifact which we are all assuming to this point to be located on Earth- which is also the location for remote triggering of the Halo. Because Halo is a weapon, I feel this completely debunks any theory or belief held by anyone that another Halo is hidden within the Earth; since iniating its use would result in the destruction of life on Earth, which is trying to be prevented. What we do know is that there is in fact a superstructure within the Earth, how vast or its operations are uncertain. What is likely though, is that the Earth will serve as a safety zone wherein any life forms that enter the Ark will be saved from the destruction brought about by Halo in its effort to destory the flood by destroying life. You might go so far as to say that he who controls the Earth controls life as we know it.
In Halo 3 it is possible we will see a union between the human's and the Covenant to stop the flood. This means that the Halo's will be activated and will be fired. My only reason for this is that its something being alluded to all throughout the series and is something, in my opinion, we all want to see; simply to know what it looks like and how it works. The opening in the superstructure we see in the trailer is likely to be the entrance to the Ark which would explain the migration of the Covenant to it. On a side note you can also see birds flying towards the opening as well, which is symbolic of the idea that the Ark will safeguard destruction, and for all life to flock to it for preservation. Of course this is rather ridiculous since birds hardly have any idea what is going on on Earth, but they merely serve as symbolic reinforcement for the concept of the Ark.
If we see a union between the covenant and humans it will not be all covenant but only sects who do not agree and no longer defend the profit of Truth and the great journey. The ones who do join with humans will do so in an effort to stop the profit since his ultimate goal it seems is to get into the Ark, activate halos firing system, destroy all life, and re-emerge supreme ruler of all Earth and beyond. When and if we see halo activated to the no- turning- back point, im sure a twist will be thrown in in which someone will have to remain outside the Ark after it closes (if thats what it does) to complete an objective, ensuring the safety of all within the Ark, and ensure that the flood will never be able to repopulate. My guess is that the Arbiter will probably parish in heroic fashion since it characteristic of past Arbiter's that they all die serving the cause. Of course the Arbiter is not on Earth and will probably be going to yes, a third Halo. It is Halo 3 after all. Chief's fight will finally be on Earth, fighting off Covenant and taking out the profit. Arbiter, Sergent Johnson, and Miranda will save Cortana from Gravemind, defeat him, and restore Cortana if she has in fact been corrupted.
I think it also may be possible that the Chief will die, though I think its doubtful since no one wants to see the Master badass die after going through all of this.
In reference to Cortana's words some of what the monitor says may help explain it. The monitor hacks Cortana's files to uncover she has a vast and intimate knowledge of human history that it has obtained from her. When Cortana says she knows your past, your future, she is possibly refering to the fact she knows human history/nature, and the Gravemind has filled her in on the future since he is the one who probably knows about the forerunners who fought this battle last. He himself may even be a forerunner, the lone survivor. If the last time Halo was activated it destroyed all life this would explain why all forerunner's are now extinct. This draws the conclusion that they knew all would die, but left behind the Ark so that any future life would have this vessel to prevent them from having to settle for the same untimely end as they did. Of course why not they use it themselves? I am certain aspects of what is detailed here will be seen in Halo 3. Anyone with comments, criticisms good and bad welcome and encouraged to contribute. Much of what i've said has been said before by countless others though some of it speaks of my one invention.
P.S.- anyone want to wonder why the Montior refers to MC as the reclaimer?
