Subject: Bungie is "Crunching"?

Tin shacks and catfish bones.

This is from Mail Sack 10..

There are ebbs and flows in the tempo for building a game. Some weeks, giving structure to the raw space is even and steady. Other weeks, we spend more hours atop our cranes than any real-world safety regulation would ever allow. Developers call this Crunch. At Bungie, we don't reserve those precious moments for just the very end of our process.

I'm not "hip to the square" with developer phases and whatnot. From what I've gathered, "crunch" seems to come closer to the "end". Does this mean that Bungie is nearing the end of a certain phase/process, or am I just not understanding this paragraph very well?

Ad Infinitum

Crunch-time usually refers to a critical moment. In development, I suppose this would mean they're putting the final touches on something, or finishing something for a deadline. Hmm.

The end of the paragraph:

They are emphasizing that they do all of this far prior to the very end so that everything is as perfect as it can be and there is less pressure toward the end.

I assume they are in a crunch to hit some sort of internal milestone.

Yeah, this. As I understand it (which, admittedly, is not very well), they go into "crunch" to meet various deadlines for internal release candidates and such. Doesn't mean necessarily that they are nearing a final product.

Tin shacks and catfish bones.

I assume they are nowhere near final product. I guess the "internal milestone" would be the best explanation.

More than likely, they're reaching an important milestone. You can crunch at any point during development...but generally speaking, it's frowned upon to do so.

If you take anything from it know that the production of Destiny is indeed in full swing and they are making great progress. At least that's how I see it.

Frowned upon? What? From my understand of the entertainment industry, if it be Gaming or Movies, a crunch period is crucial to get the client their product on the shelves or the theater on time. It's a part of the industry and to say it's frowned upon a little bit uneducated because there is no point of production when you are never stressed to finish.

They are in "crunch" for a milestone probably.

Crunch can happen in a few spots in the development cycle. It could be towards the end of development. or for a deadline. IE sometime later this year they are planning a massive reveal and need the game to be at a certain point before showing it off. And they are in overdrive to get it to that point.

At Bungie, we don't reserve those precious moments for just the very end of our process.

This is implying that the crunch is not for the end of the game. But for another milestone. Why would they have another major milestone? A public reveal.

Why do people in ship mutinies always ask for "better treatment"? I'd ask for a pinball machine, because with all that rocking back and forth, you'd get a lot of free games.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

There is more than just the "finished game"milestone.

There are many more before that.

Crunch times don't have to be near the end. Nice find, though.
