Indeed, battles such as in Two Betrayels, where it was three Wraiths, a few shades, and a lot of infantry versus a large concentration of flood. In Halo 2, the problem is that we didn't have a chance for fullscale battles because Arbiter was sent on stealth missions, and Chief was also doing his own bits and pieces of stealth. In Halo: Combat Evolved, the wars weren't related to Chief; he was watching the Covenant fighting the Flood. Because he was a third party, he wasn't on either side. The only time that happens in Halo 2 is High Charity, in which case there's almost no possibility to safely view the battles as they unfold.
I'm sure that Halo 3 will boast a good number of large-scale battles, seeing as the objective is to defend Earth from a good... 500 vessels, not to mention the unknown Forerunner craft, which may have advanced weaponry. Indeed, we should expect some heated conflicts, probably with dozens of Wraiths and multitudes of smaller crafts.
As for the power of the Xbox 360, you guys underestimate it. Current games haven't even tried to stretch its capacity, and future games (which plan to feature armies of opponants at once, such as in Ninety-Nine Nights) won't even stretch it. The chances are good that Bungie is fully capable of battles consisting of Phantoms, Wraiths, Ghosts, Spectres, Banshees versus Pelicans, Scorpions, Warthogs, and maybe even more vehicles.
Yay for more power.
