reach is a damn good addition to the halo franchise but matchmaking is worse than ever and its just plain awful, 343 just make it worse and worse with each update. every single one of the reach maps are terrible and unfit for good gameplay, forge and customs are where this game truely shines, the playerbase have done their bit very well overall by making cool maps and interesting minigames that are already better than anything bungie/343 have done.
however despite many players efforts the community spirit is low and people play as lone wolves the entire game, that and the fast paced gameplay doesn't feel like halo, the gameplay mechanics and the weapons are one of the main flaws i.e the DMR but it doesn't help the fact that the maps are terrible and the fact that players don't understand the meaning of teamwork moreso than halo 3. but that doesn't stop the game itself from being bad, forge mode is quite possible the best fps map editor out there and by far the most simplistic that and the fact that the amount of custom game options have expanded greatly, stats are easier to access and it's easier to share and download players files and play them with friends.
i think in terms of features, reach did very well, it was the core gameplay elements that ruined the entire game, halo 3 was almost perfect yet they removed the best weapon in all of halo, the halo 3 br, i don't know many people who hated the br and those that did never gave a logical reason behind it other than "it's overpowered" but nin truth it was a balanced weapon which required a little bit of skill to use but rewarded players who practised with it with it's damage. the assault rifle is never supposed to beat a battle rifle at mid range, in fact the needler could destroy a battle rifle yet it cannot destroy a DMR.
the matchmaking playlists are a joke and need to be separated into separate playlists, btb heavies should be part of action sack and elite slayer needs it's own playlist, why is it not yet done? it shouldn't take 2 years to make a playlist for elite slayer, it's a simple request and nobody answers in fact i think it would be better if the reach servers were player managed because the idiots at 343 don't know a damn thing about server management and whenever they mess with it, they screw up the whole system.
but still if reach was made lets say 20 years ago back when there was no online it would be a great fps title for it's time due to it's features sadly it's online gameplay is broken so it will never live up to that. i think online gameplay has changed the way games play alot because it's not the ai your fighting against it's real players and the industry doesn't seem to know how to deal with that, reach is just one of those games that failed to tackle online despite halo 3's success.
