Subject: Well, matchmaking is messed up. But we all know that.

You guys probably get more threads like these than Kakarot's power level, but eh, I still feel like ranting.

Your matchmaking system is -blam!-. It is literally impossible to have an even mediocre team, because 9/10 of the time, I'm pitted with sergeant grade 2-warrant officer levelled retards. Most of them are squeaking little -blam!-s who cry for their moms every time I steal a DMR they wanted. The other team just happens to be a bunch of max ranks, or close to -blam!- max ranks, who all happen to be in one -blam!- party. In a time when none of my friends are online and I just want to play a few matches solo, I run into these more often than how many people there are in China. It's the reverse when I'm in a big party myself, it seems you're hardwired for -blam!- lopsided matches.

Also, even if I set my preferences to 'good connection', there's no way in hell I'm gonna find a -blam!- match without 16 blackscreens. Last -blam!- game I had restarted the entire match because of a half hour blackscreen that the wonderful god that is the CEO of Bungie decided to slap across my face, right as I was about to win a match, and when the blackscreen finally -blam!- left, half my team was gone while the other team was still 6 strong. We got -blam!- wrecked.

Also, please add the title update changes to Invasion, I'm tired of my needle rifle's bloom going haywire every time I fire a single shot, I have to waste an entire -blam!- clip on a doucher with no shields while he downs me with a -blam!- plasma repeater.

Bungie, I doubt I'll play any more Halo. Hopefully 343 will have a better matchmaking system in Halo 4, cuz the current one is complete and under bull-blam!- mixed in with dog puke and Justin Bieber's hair.

Whelp, I'm done with my epic rant. Love you all, hopefully I'll get Hero rank before I quit.

Just because you are a low rank, doesn't mean anything tbh. The rest is ok though I guess.

I'd recommend playing Halo 3. It is very much alive.

  • 03.29.2012 4:56 AM PDT

I don't really think Hero is too much of a low rank. I don't consider myself a bad player, either, I'm more of an around average player. It's just the other teammates who can't grasp the concept of the game that bugs me.

I might get into Halo 3 matchmaking aswell, hopefully I won't run into as many lopsided matches, because it's just getting -blam!- annoying.

Solution to everything except the connection issue: get friends and play MLG, one of the only good playlists in the game.

No, no. You said you get paired with privates and warrant officers that are bad. I am saying I've met privates that just don't play Reach, even though they are above average.

Rank means nothing.

lol you are both mad and bad. Look at you crying like a little baby over the matchmaking system. Sad, mad, and bad.

You fail automatically if you call someone bad with a blocked GT.
I'm also not crying. Just saying.

This sig will Self-Destruct in 3.... 2.... 1.... Thank you for your time. Cookie?

*sigh*

Why is it that I have to support the side that also has idiots on it?

I guess we can't have a reasonable argument about why Matchmaking is crap without someone ranting trival nonsense that is possibly some of the most idiotic crap we've ever heard.

The only issue I have with your post is that Bungie hasn't had any control over any matchmaking for any Halo for almost a full year now. Ever since July 2011, it has all been in the hands of 343 Industries, and they refuse to get dedicated servers for Reach (or even Halo 3 for that matter), hence you get black screened.

I agree with the matchmaking being messed up completely. If you ever float over to the Waypoint Forums, they are awash in people who are Halo stalwarts/veterans who are extremely unhappy with how 343 is changing the matchmaking (lets remove Squad Slayer, and add in another Slayer that's all but identical to Team Slayer and pimp it out like it's completely different... even though there is nothing different about it).

But 343 refuses to listen.

Other than the company you named, you nailed it on the head, OP. 343 tweaked the True Skill matchmaking system that runs behind the scenes, and now you will get matched up with/against people who are nowhere near your skill level. Either above or below.

Now, I'm not trying to say that I'm a great Halo player. Far from it. But I love Halo and I love to have fun. But 343 is actively working to take any fun that remains in Halo and eviscerating it.

I do not have a good feeling about Halo 4... it almost seems like 343 is trying to turn Halo into CoD... and that's just a blasphemy I don't even care to think about.

"Dedicated servers" are not economical. They come with a very high cost to maintain.

All 343 does is Halo. How could it not be economical? They wouldn't be used for anything except Waypoint, and Halo 3 & Reach. Dedicated servers would be perfectly suitable because that's all that they do. Halo. That's it.

  • 03.29.2012 8:22 AM PDT

ever heard of the mute button or just join one of your friends parties

  • 03.29.2012 8:40 AM PDT

Play with friends or get used to being matched against full teams.
I've got 2 friends who play Reach, but we're never online at the same time, because we all have the same job, so we never have the same days off.

I've made peace with this and have embraced the randies as a way of life, albeit a -blam!- one.

http://halo.bungie.org/misc/networkguide.html

Why host games on players' consoles? Wouldn't dedicated servers be better?

With the limitations of current technology, a perfectly fair and problem-free experience over the Internet is not going to happen. Dedicated servers can reduce the severity of some of these problems, but they are not the magic bullet that many people seem to think. Bungie also now have a lot of experience with their current network model, and prefer to work on improving it, rather than ditching the system.

Advantages
So what's good about dedicated servers? The key benefits are:

Stability - servers can offer higher stability and consistency; there's much less chance of bandwidth problems or connection fluctuations.

Fairness - dedicated servers are a bit fairer because no individual player has host, and it reduces the difference in degrees of latency different players experience.

Security - servers are also a bit more secure against certain networking attacks (though by no means immune).

Disadvantages

Unfortunately there are a lot of downsides to using dedicated servers as well:

Cost - usually far more expensive than people realise, when you consider hardware, bandwidth, and support. This is also why servers for some games are shut down after a few years.

Scaleability - this is a huge disadvantage with servers. You've got to have enough to meet demand, or the experience will be ruined for everyone. If you have too many at a given time, that money is wasted.

Cost/Performance Ratio - the Internet continues to get faster and better. In a few years we've gone from broadband starting to take off to a position where most people can get high speeds. In Halo 2 only a handful of people could host a good quality 16 player game. These days there are many more who can do so, and plenty who can host decent 8 player games. As the Internet improves, the advantages gained by using dedicated servers are reduced, and you get a lot less value for the money and effort.

Doesn't Solve Cheating - servers do not eliminate cheating, they simply make certain kinds of cheats harder. You might not get standbyed or bridged out of a game, but with DoS attacks becoming increasingly more common, you or even the server itself might be attacked. A few years ago in my original guide, some people were scoffing about the idea that cheaters would move over to DoS attacks, yet the situation has become so problematic that even the mass media has started to pick up on it.

There is no way to stop every single cheat possible, and there will always be some who will be prepared to do it. Some are literally prepared to commit a crime to cheat at a video game nowadays! You really think that these people won't move over to the next way of cheating if you fix a particular one?

Fail? No, I am winning. My dick is bigger than your meaningless K/D. Damn, why are you teen boys so retarded?

So you call me bad and then talk about your dick and compare it to a k/d. I'm guessing your like 11? Maybe 12?

  • 03.29.2012 9:55 AM PDT

Mediocre Backpacker
56% W\L
2.86 k\d
3.18 DMR
7.29 God Magnum
7.79 Sniper
5.34 Needle Rifle

While ranks mean nothing, some lower ranks could be new players. The only playlist you may consistently find full parties is usually BTB. I feel your pain though, I'm just now going in with one friend.

Someone's butt hurt that someone talks about precious Reach and they can't back it up because they know it's bad.

Your gamertag wouldn't be the same as your screen name would it? That would be hilarious.

Well, now that explains it. Ever since July, I've been against either people who absolutely beat the living crap out of me, or people who I beat the living crap out of. Rarely have I found a match where the opposite team is competent enough to get the gist of how to play and pose a challenge, where we actually go head to head and struggle to gain the lead. Games like those are my favorite, because those are what excites me and keeps me going- which is why I play Halo in the first place.

Sadly, I have to agree with you about the upcoming Halo. Halo 4 will still probably be a great game, but the matchmaking system will possibly be -blam!-.

I'll continue adding to this post, brb.
