Any marketing major will tell you that word-of-mouth is the most effective form of advertisement, and that does not change as far as private groups advertising goes. Really cool groups end up gaining members really quickly, while mediocre groups don't.

A lot of people don't seem to realize: there is no magic way to suddenly force hundreds of people to join a new private group just because you created it. If the group is unique, offers something that other private groups don't, and has good membership, it will grow regardless of any available advertising methods. If it doesn't, no change to the Classifieds Forum or private message system will help.

I'm a Business Administration Major, and I agree. Though you oversimplified it. You still need to stimulate word of mouth at the start up, but in a general sense, what you said is correct.

This experiment has made me quite mad.

My proposal would be to have 25 (or less) squares per page. In each square, the author would be able to describe his group in 60 characters or less. The name of the group would be above the description in bigger letters. Clicking the square would bring users to that group's homepage.

It would look similar to this. Kind of like the Halo 3 File Shares I guess.

Not saying that would be bad, but it would be a waste of time in my opinion. The web team would have to create that system exclusively for the Classifieds, and I'd argue it's not a good use of labor time. You can still see post titles in the Classifieds. I don't think variable-length descriptions would help me find things easier.

I think the best plan of attack is to make groups easier to find. If you have a group about puppies, PM spamming or Classifieds posts won't make people join the group, because even if people like puppies (who doesn't?) they may not like them enough to join a group about them. An full front-page advertisement wouldn't change this. But if people who really really love puppies want to be able to find a group about puppies, it would be nice for them to be able to easily find that! Hylebos had a good idea in this regard:

I think that you should be able to tag your groups like you can tag your Reach media, and people looking for a group for, say, Minecraft could search for it and find all the groups on Bnet that are somewhat relevant to Minecraft.

Obviously only group admins would be able to tag the group, but anyone would be able to upvote individual tags.

I also agree with Foman's assertion that word of mouth is the best way to get people in a group. With the exception of one of the groups I created, there is no way to magically get hundreds of people into your group without trying. I'd approve of changes like group tags, but in the meantime I'd suggest a more personal approach. Get to know people first, then talk groups. It's much harder to decline a group invite when it's from a friend.

I agree that sending pms works a little better then the Classifieds. The only problem with your test is that you've been around for a while and people most likely recognize your user name. I never accept a group invite from people I don't remember or new users.

Oh hey there

It's a metaphor for the 07s' lack of identity. too old to be newfag, yet too new to be oldfag, we wander b.net in search of a home, forever trying to be something we are not.

The problem with the Classifieds is that people don't actively search for chapters to join when they don't know the people in them. Chapters tend to grow organically and people join them because they are invited by people they know not because they saw an advertisement for it.

That or people have a general interest in the subject the chapter discusses and they search for that specific kind of chapter using the search feature.

At least that has been my experience.

#2 Supporter Halocharts, #11 other account.
"Ordinary love is selfish, deeply rooted in desires and satisfactions. Divine love is without condition, without boundary, without change."
You are all loved beyond measure.
I, like you, am a light-sound-vibration complex that resonates with others. I have hopes and dreams and ambitions, just like you! I AM, and so are you! Yes, we are one and the same, you and I.

There really needs to be a way to show content of the group -- making forums viewable, for example. Otherwise, why would you ever join a (discussion) group? Because it has a cool title and a lot of members? Most major internet forums allow you to see what you're getting into before joining. Just going by "we discuss such and such topics and are pretty cool and active" isn't persuasive enough to make me bother with groups.
