I am...whimsical today.

There are some inconsitancies in the books however. The manual says that the Covanant attacked 2 days before the mission began, but in the book I'm sure they were setting off on the mission as the Covanant jumped in-system.
Also if the Covanant had no idea that we were on Earth, why did they send the Unyeilding Hyrophant and a massive battle group to come and see us?

They are contradicting each other.

  • 05.29.2006 6:04 AM PDT

Ok look, Yes there are other Spartans in the books, and the books are officially bungie.

BUT, there is very little chance they would bring these other spartans into the game. Why? because most people who play Halo have not read the books and it would make very little sense to introduce MAJOR brand new characters this late into the game story line. Also, in the game, being the only Spartan is a big part of what makes the Chief so awesome and badass. why would they take that away? I wish all of this speculation about the other spartans entering into the game would go away, its probably not gonna happen. the books are meant to help you understand the story better, and give you little things to recognize in the game and be look "OH YEAH i read about that! it makes more sense!" THe books are not meant to completely change the story, they are to complement it.

There, that's what i think.

I got his sarcasm...one person has to implement sarcasm and then you get a pile of terrorist chipmunks crashing your party, not fun at all..

perhaps in the books, but...

BUNGIE DID NOT WRITE THEM. THE BOOKS ARE NOT THE AUTHORITY ON WHAT BUNGIE DECIDES TO DO IN THEIR GAMES.

Bungie said, in their own game manual, that MC is the last one.

In the manual it says he THINKS hes the last one

Bungie do not write the books as we all know. But they have a say in what is in them. They would not have any spartans alive unless they wanted them alive.

The books have no relevence to the games. Casual gamers do NOT READ! the halo books. Although Bugie may add another Spartan )mabey the USNC have been "making" another Spartain while chief was on 04 and 07 Halos....

Spartan 117- John, is and always will be, the last, spartan alive. He is the only one who got off reach, all other spartans died on reach, how the -blam!- could 4 spartans surivive, basicly 1000 of thousands of nuclear plasma bombs goign off. ITS IMPOSSABLE.

STOP ARGUEING, WE WIN.

JOHN IS THE ONLY SPARTAN ALIVE.

Big text makes you look manly.

And we honestly don't care if there are any spartens left or not. It's all fictional anyway.

Most importantly, THE BOOKS ARE CANON! It has been stated time and again. Slightly less importantly, if you'll notice, the manual is written from the Human viewpoint. That means coming from HighCom in Sydney. As far as they know, SPARTAN-117 is the last of the SPARTAN-II program.

The books and the game follow a similar stor line but are separate entities. There are more Spartans left in the book universe, but not in the game universe. As cool as having to fight along side more Spartans in the game would be, I personally don't think that it would happen(at least not in Halo 3). This would create confusion among the people who haven't read the books. Maybe we will see them in another Halo game after this trilogy ends.

The book and the game are in the same universe.

About the quote in the Halo manual: At that point in time in the Halo Universe, everyone thought that John was the last Spartan left. They didn't know that the covenant didn't completely glass Reach. They had no way of knowing that there were surviving Spartans on Reach.

The other Spartans in the novels don't count, because the novels were written by fans, not Bungie staffers.

The novels were written by people who worked very closely with Bungie. Bungie had to approve what the authors wrote. The also had access to the Halo Story Bible. The books are canon.

Reach wasn't completely glassed.

he was thought to be the last, but if someone was smart about reading the books before making ascertions you would actually kno that there are more instead of being ignorant

No you don't moron, the covenant only fired their plasma cannons on the poles of Reach, they then invaded the ONI facility on Reach. The Spartans were already there and they retreated underground, found a time bending crystal. The covenant wouldn't fire at them as long as they had the crystal so the spartans escaped when John arrived in a dropship which he had stolen from a Covenant ship he and other marines captured

Is everyone completely retarted? The books are directly correlated with the game in every way. And for those of you say casual gamers don't read, -blam!- you. I've been a casual gamer my entire life and I read. As for those of you who say they won't introduce new stuff that would shock the gamers and followers, -blam!- you too. Most people who play the games have read the books, and if you would know anything, they introduced the Brutes randomly and they could just as well do that with the Spartans. You are -blam!- morons.

You should of made up your own instrument. You could have named it the PolarLighting -a-phone. People would buy it and they would all be like "Awh, He's so cool for inventing the PolarLighting-a-phone."

If you don't believe me, here's the story according to the Halo: CE game manual (page 5):

"On Reach, a secret military project to create cyborg super-soldiers takes on newfound importance. The soldiers of the SPARTAN-II project rack up an impressive record against the Covenant in test deployments, but there are too few of them to turn the tide of the war.

Existing SPARTAN-II soldiers are recalled to Reach for further augmentation. The plan: board a Covenant vessel with the improved SPARTAN-IIs and learn the location of the Covenant home world. Two days before the mission begins, Covenant forces strike Reach and annihilate the colony. The Covenant are now on Earth's doorstep. One ship, the Pillar of Autumn, escapes with THE LAST SPARTAN-II and makes a blind jump into deep space, hoping to lead the Covenant away from Earth."

Emphasis on the phrase, "last SPARTAN-II." This is, as far as I know, all Bungie has said about any of the other Spartans (except for the one in DOA4.) The other Spartans in the novels don't count, because the novels were written by fans, not Bungie staffers. The novels don't adhere to the games completely, and the games certainly don't have to adhere to the novels.

Of course, if Bungie changed its story itself, feel free to say so.

At the time that the Pillar of Autumn jumped it was assumed that all of the remaining SPARTAN IIs on Reach died. Who would have guessed that they would survive when the planet was glassed?
