Subject: How Will Bungie Revolutionize FPS Games Again?

That is of course, if so-called "Destiny" is an FPS. And to be more specific, an MMOFPS. What do you think Bungie will do that has never been done before? They've got the resources to do some spectacular things, so what do you think they'll pull off? Will it replicate or maybe even surpass Halo's success?

I've got faith. And I sense something amazing is being crafted.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did. They have the resources and the talent to pull it off.

We have absolutely no idea what type of game Bungie is making.

I don't think they will, as the saying goes lightening never strikes the same place twice.

It would be a big challenge for them to do it again with FPS IMO.

I'm not doubting the talent they have as i believe they can revolutionize gaming once again. Just not FPS again. Not yet.

Maybe RPG or RTS?

Yeah, i believe Myth was a RTS. But have they revolutionized the genre? IMO, no.

If it's an MMOFPS, maybe it would compete with the likes of Valve and TF2?

For sure. TF2 is a bit outdated. It's a good game, but it's not spectacular and there's nothing "revolutionary" about it. If Bungie decides to once again go down the FPS path, it would most likely be more fun to play than TF2.

No one's sure until they reveal anything officially. Even so, competition would push Valve into TF3 territory, were that to ever be released. I just hope it will be on the PC and not be a console exclusive or port of some sort. Wait and see, I guess.

Personnaly, i'm thinking about the fact they're creating an entire world, a kind of planet who's living by itself. Staten and some other people of the studio gave some commentary that could lead to this concept of creating "a world more for the fan than our", you'll think about MMO of course, but we can imagine a persistent world with it's own day/night cycle, fauna, lands, physics...

You know i don't like this movie but Pandora in Avatar (2009) has this idea of the "planet created from scratch" if we can employ this term... (There's a lot of recycled stuff in the movie from various media but that's not the subject)

I wouldn't be surprised. FPS games are what they are good at.

Technically lightening has already struck twice for them in this area. Maybe not to the same degree as Halo in popularity, but Marathon did some pretty revolutionary things in the FPS genre, from the multiplayer modes, to 8-player co-op, the being the first FPS to use the now integral mouse-look for aiming.

I think some kind of MMOFPS would be a fitting choice for them. With Halo they always wanted to have more of an open world feel, they just never got to do that. A genre that is relatively untouched sounds just a good thing to invest on. Being a well known developer, Bungie could very well be the game to make teh MMOFPS genre more mainstream.

They could also go down the regular paths of RPG, but I don't beleive there is much to do there. I don't claim the RPG genre is completely done, but there are already some huge RPG and MMORPG games out there. Of course if they manage to implement a larger player impact on the events of the game, they could very well revolutionarize that genre too.

But my bet is still on the MMO or at least open world FPS. FPS is what Bungie are good at, open world experiences are what they have always wanted to do and they definitely have the popularity to really make an impact on gaming if they do something that isn't very common.

It'd be cool if they remade the Marathon series, I for one never got to play it. Doubt they will though...

See you on the battlefield.

I'm not even sure exactly what kind of game Destiny is supposed to be. But with Bungie at the helm, we know it will be awesome.

Hopefully we'll get a peek on Bungie Day. That would be the best way to do a reveal like this in my opinion.

I think that anything Bungie makes has the ability to surpass Halo's success or the success of any other game. Bungie is known for "revolutionization." They will certainly do it again, but to speculate is pointless, as we are not Bungie.

  • 04.05.2012 6:52 PM PDT

Just on another walkabout

I think they are gonna take the whole forge thing to a whole new level in their new game.

  • 04.06.2012 10:59 AM PDT

It was stated their new game is an action game, and Marty made comments that seemed to suggest that they weren't going to make a radical change to the core qualities. I interpret this (and hope it) to mean it will still be an action game set in mostly a first person perspective, as the Halo games were.

I think we are going to see at least a partially or fully realized persistent world with an economy of some sorts, so this is where the "MMO" influence will come to bear, but I think the new franchise and game will be a unique experience that draws from the best of modern gaming, and the rich history of Bungie.

  • 04.06.2012 12:31 PM PDT

However we think they're gonna make them better...they will blow our minds with something evan better.
