Strategy/tactic-wise, each weapon has an equivalent.
plasma pistol-magnum
plasma rifle/needler-smg
carbine-battle rifle
beam rifle-sniper rifle
fuel rod-rocket launcher
energy sword-shotgun
plasma grenade-frag grenade

The plasma rifle in halo 1 felt like a "heavy gun" and an actual rifle.
the plasma rifle in halo 2 feels more like a light autmatic pistol like weapon,

Halo 1 weapons are more realsitic (exept AR needs more damage)

Plasma Weapons? Homing and exploding pink crystals? How is this realistic?

All the weapons should be balanced on both sides but also be totally unique.
in halo 2 the BR and carbine, sniper and particle beam crap shows a lack of creativity and lazy game design. Sorry bungie but its the truth.

I read a while back that Bungie had been planning on some sort of a rocket/grenade needler weapon, where it shot a huge crystal that broke up-mid air and all of the separate needles broke apart and began homing. To me, that sounds like a very unique weapon to have, and one that would fit the Covenant well, especially against the flood.

That's the early version of a needler, or a misconception of the needler.
